in the last month i've been using my desktop computer to do all my gigs. it out performs my laptop by far. i was wondering if anyone knows
a place i could buy a rack that holds my tower, keyboard, monitor ect.. i'd like to get more mobile with it. also can a tower perform lying on it's side? jus trying to save a little setup time, i'm a mobile dj.

get rid of your desktop case and build it into something like this....

dr zinc thanks for the sugestions, but i did'nt want to go to that extreme, also i have my desktop computer running flawlessly. i would'nt dare tear it down when i depend on it so much since i run 75% video now. i just want to reduce the setup time. i normaly do 1 gig on fridays & 2 gigs on saturdays, all in diffrent cities. i never seen anybody with a tower racked with keyboard and monitor.

you could still get one of those shiny cases, then start building up your next gig machine, over time...
then when its ready, your current machine could become your backup machine, and so on.
id love one of them PC cases, but im just a bit concerned about the harddrives during transportation..
does anyone have these in a flight case??

Mine's a Shuttle PC, with the drives inside, small form factor, but i got the shuttle carry bag. Its padded so it will protect against scratches, and normal transportation. (Might not survive a short trip down the stairs, though. lol)
Id be comfortable in a fixed location for the server cases, but not on the road.
(Also fixed location = Tamper proof security screws for the rack)

Very nice, here a glimpse of mine...

though mine is limited by the socket 939 athlon dual core, and DDR1 ram.
the next upgrade will be the same style of case, but they do Quad core, and the latest RAM...

I have been using a rackmount PC for over 3 years and have not had a hard drive failure yet. The rackmount is mounted inside a SKB Mini Gig rig. The key for me is to use Enterprise Hard Drives, specifically Western Digital. These drives are rated for the harsh environment of the server room, which is a high vibration environment. Sound familiar, nightclub, schoolo dance, etc. are high vibration environments. They also hold up to vibrations when they are powered down during transport.
If you are truly concerned about drive failure, then invest the big bucks and use SSDs. No moving parts to fail, very lightweight, fast, but expensive.

I've built 5 systems all using this 2u case with no problems, all at least 3 years old now with weekly/daily use:

I'm a mobile guy. Mainly weddings, but do clubs with video & karaoke too. No problems. 6 minute set up. ;P
I haven't seen anyone using a tower case either. Why do you think that is...?

Hi!
This looks really nice, im thinking about a same system wit 2U. But is it possible to use normal size components inside, like motherboard, harddrive, power supply and so on or is it more expensive parts inside a 2U ?
And what about the noise, at the gig its doesnt matter if the rack chassi is sounds a lot, but if i use it at home practising i dont want that, so is it possisble to make it silent ?
In what way thoose 2U and 4U are better then normal computer chassi, i mean is it a smaller chance that a computer in a 2U will stop working then a "normal" computer chassi ?
Tell me more about the tecnical advance of having 2U or 4U more that its looks nicer with a 2U in a dj-booth :-)

does anybody know why i can't continue to use my desktop computer for all my gigs? i just finished a 6 hour family reuion
without any issues whatso ever. in the course of a night i would have to restart the program 2 or three times when it
starts acting up(5 sec freeze, running choppy, jerky ect..)i'v had 3 laptops in the past, and they pretty much run okay
other than small glitches. i now run my desktop and my laptop side by side plugged into a cheap walmart switcher for the
video output. and i have yet to switch to the laptop. i stop bringing cd players in the event. just wondering if i'm building
a false since of confidence in my desktop computer.

I built a desktop into a rackmount case. and haven't looked back since. I used it in the club I was dj'ing at for almost a year with the clubs CD decks as back up - it wasn;t untill i realized that i hadn't turned on the cd players for 3 months that I stopped even worrying about it.
I havn't used CD decks or turntable for 3 years.

Ya know, when we switched over from vinyl to CDs in the late 80s, early 90s, I carried my LPs and tables for about 6 months Marcel. When I do jobs now, I use only my PC. It took me about a year of carrying both CDs, and players, and my PC. Amazing how technology has changed things for us....
