I currently run vdj8 but not updated for a while as it works fine. But if i want to try vdj8.1 and be able to revert back should i get any issues, what do i need to do ?
Do i just create another shortcut on desktop to other exe
so say virtualdj8.exe and virtualdj8.1.exe

Yeah, that would work. I just rename the previous .exe with it's build number and leave it in the folder should it be required at short notice.
8.1 is pretty stable I believe so you should have no problems.

what so C:\Program Files (x86)\VirtualDJ\virtualdj8.exe
rename to say C:\Program Files (x86)\VirtualDJ\virtualdj8lastused.exe
then update and have shortcuts to both

Exactly.
All builds use the same database and settings so the only difference is the .exe
There have been a few subtle changes behind the scenes that are reflected in the settings.xml but both 8.0 and 8.1 should work fine.

If i want a previous build, do i download the full exe and run it, giving me the option as discussed here?

Yes, you just download the .exe file, you store it somewhere on your PC and you run it.
Just remember to answer "No" if it prompts you to update.
