Tema: Crossfader in middle position is louder than either sides
Hi all,

Never noticed this before and maybe it's even normal but why might the volume be louder on a song when the crossfader is in the middle when only a single side is playing. For example the left deck is playing a song and it's not as loud when the fader is in the left position but louder when the crossfader is in the central position.

crossfaderCustom option set perhaps?

Nope, that's blank, crossfaderDisable is No and crossfaderHampster is No

Strange,

Audio setup?

Thanks @Adion,

Very basic nothing fancy, using the VMS2 Wasapi drivers for chan 1&2 and chan 3&4 and using my laptop headphone Realtek Wasapi for chan 1&2.

Testing it more, if I slide the crossfader with my mouse in the software, volume level is the same at the center as it is on either side. It's either the American Audio controller driver issue or my crossfader might have to be replaced. Surprised if it's the latter since I don't do much parties and don't use the cross fader much and it's weird that both right and left side has the identical drop in volume.

you could set up a custom crossfader curve with a slight dip in the middle :-)

autoHeadphones option changes anything?

You can test that your crossfader hardware is outputting the correct signal, by watching the values in the mapper's upper right window. Should go smoothly from 0.0 Left, to 0.5 Center, to 1.00 Right.

Interested in what you have set your VMS2 controller front panel knob (crossfader curve), shown as #46 in the VMS2 hardware manual. (does changing that knob make any difference)

I see NO mapping for XFADER_CURVE in the VMS2's default mapping (knob #46), meaning it may not have midi out for that knob. And hence operate hardware only

and maybe check, what is the software's crossfaderCurve is set to in options?

Does any combo of software and hardware setting get it to work as expected? (assuming your crossfader tests ok, with the first check)

Bump...

Unit: DDJ-SZ
VDJ v2023 b7388

-Note: If you're only playing one track at a time, you won't experience this issue (see repro steps later in the post)

-I have a similar experience using my DDJ-SZ controller, where the crossfader when set to the middle is louder than either side no matter which crossfader option is selected (e.g., Full, Smooth, Scratch).

-When the controller is not used, the crossfader works as expected. For example, when the crossfader is set to Full, the track doesn't dip when the crossfader is moved from the middle to the side the track is playing.

-Tried the same controller in Serato and the crossfader works as expected. Either side is loudest.

-I repeated all of the cases above using the crossfader curve on the controller as well. In particular, all the way to the right, middle, and left.

-Lastly, in VDJ, I configured the following for 'crossfaderCustom' to test it out. Point being, in this configuration, as an example, I would expect that if I'm playing a song on the right deck, that song should play at least as loud when the cross fader is all the way to the right, not less loud than the middle.

-I could introduce a bigger dip beyond 0.5 in the middle to compensate, which I'm playing with, but trying to figure out if other folks can easily reproduce and if there's a config / setup i'm missing.

Reproduction Steps:
1. Play 2 tracks simultaneously (one on deck 1 and one on deck 2). Note, this is a requirement. If there is only one deck playing, the behavior will not be observed.
2. Set cross fader to Full / on controller all the way to the right
3. Not a requirement, but so that you can more clearly hear the dip in track volume, place a Echo effect on Deck 1 (with a trailing stop and mute source on); point being --- the track should still be progressing forward on deck 1 without any sound
4. Drag the cross fader on the controller to the middle. Observe the volume for Deck 2
5. Drag the cross fader on the controller all the way to the right. Observe the volume for Deck 2 is now lower than it was when set to the middle.

Why is this a problem?
It's pretty obvious, but for thoroughness sake, when you're transitioning to a new track, it initially sounds loud/crisp as you cross the middle, but when you finally drag the crossfader all the way over, the volume of the track suffers a significant dip.

I've been using this software for a month and I finally figured out the default setting is "Full" for the Cross-Fader which sounds terrible while Auto-Mixing. I suggest switching the Cross-Fader to "Smooth" for a linear yet flat response that allows less noticable transitions even with some of the vocals overlapping. This setting sounds great in all Auto-Mix modes with the exception of "Smart" mode that currently should be avoided. I don't know why Virtual DJ did not put "Smooth" as the default setting.

DDJ-SZ has a hardware mixer.
The mixing is done by the controller hardware. Therefore, software crossfader_curve, or crossfader position should not make any difference at all. Unless you messed with factory mapping, especially the ONINIT key that instructs VirtualDJ to use "fake_mixer" e.t.c.
