I have been playing around with the "loop" (short cut on keyboard is L).
I dont really understand what the purpose of this function is? Could you guys please explain how to use it, the function of it and what the benifits are?

I think it just gets you back to the cue point. If you want to have a loop effect, you have to press 'L' in sync. |

.....and could all you pro DJ's out there explain what the pupose of this is and how would you apply this to a mix!

Using it in conjunction with a crossfader (providing you use an external mixer) is recommended. That way you can basically use it as some sort of sampler, sending a part of track over a playing beat.
It's an effective way to change between genres which can not be mixed as such, but which have similar/identical tempos.
E.g. when you have a song (Dance/House) with a strong beat, try with a rock song (like Kiss, or something) and send the melody over the playing beat. Gives some good transition possibilities.
