After singing my new Vista laptop praises last week, I've been noticing that something is not quite right, with the CPU usage. When VirtualDJ is idle the CPU meter on the skin I use is fluctuates all over the place from 3% to 35%. Is this right, and are these meters accurate.

When I play, with my RMX or maya/TCV's the CPU usage fluctuates alot more 7% to 45% and when I load up the other deck it sometimes reaches 70%, to me this is not right and too high. And these are just mp3 files I'm loading

At the moment I'm running the DPC latency checker to see it I've got any conflict any where. Everything seems fine, got green and yellow bar's on the graph. Also I've done all the usually things, like turning off UAC, sidebar Wifi and all that.

I'm abit concerned. Any ideas.

Or is this just a Vista thing, with using more resources than XP.

Vista does use more resources than XP because there's more services active. Vista has a lot going on in the background, some examples include the Volume Shadow Copy and Windows Search services. I'm not sure that your CPU usage when loading a track is too out of the ordinary, Virtual DJ will load a track as fast as it can without occupying 100% resources, speed load may play a part in that but I would think seeing upto 70% usage there is fine. Whether you have a 1 Ghz Celeron or a 3 Ghz C2D, it's possible there will be the same CPU usage, the difference is the C2D would be a lot faster.

Do you use Master Tempo or have any actively loaded antivirus software?

I do use master tempo sometimes, and I have the free version of AGV on this laptop, (basic cover) but even when I turn this off in the start up the CPU usage is still the same.

Generally when you turn off your antivirus you are only turning off the control centre. Most AV programs are a kernel service and can only be disabled in the services section of msconfig or by executing services.msc which will then require a restart.

However, I'm not sure whether it is the AV program causing these spikes, or another service or program. Unfortunately there's not a way in Windows to make a log of all the currently running programs and services which makes this sort of thing easier to diagnose.

Your usage does seem quite high but I can't compare it to my TCV setup at the moment as I'm away from my student house for a while :(
Do the spikes occur regardless of wdm and asio?

I always use Asio, whether with Timecodes or not. Sound quality is this mode is alot better IMO, but usage is high in both modes. I did try turning my AV of in msconfig.

Press the "Windows Key + R", type "cmd" and press enter. Type the following commands and press enter (everything is without quotes):

"cd desktop"
"tasklist>tasklist.txt"
"sc query>services.txt"

This will create 2 files on your Desktop, tasklist.txt and services.txt

If you can post the information of these two files it may be easier to help see which process(es) may be working when they need not be.

Edit: Alternatively, you can watch where your CPU time is being spent. Load up Virtual DJ and leave it idle. Press "Ctrl + Shift + Escape", click "Show processes from all users" and confirm any UAC dialogues. Now, sort the processes by CPU so that it's in descending order, and watch which processes and up causing the spike which you may not have expected.

Also mate, this is the CPU usage when VirtualDJ is idle.

VirtualDJ.exe 5%
Perfmon.exe 3%
taskmgr.exe 2%
svhost.exe(netsucs) 1%
dwn.exe 1%

All the rest use 0%

Thanks for posting the list, having had a quick look at it there is a lot of processes running which could safely be stopped and I haven't even got to the services yet! I'll have a more thorough look later and post back what I think, but for now I would advise for sure turning off that search indexing service! Windows Defender is another useful feature of Windows Vista but you probably don't want it running in the background whilst using Virtual DJ. Disabling Desktop Window Manager (DWM) whilst running Virtual DJ may also provide additional benefits, although you will temporarily lose Aero and the 3D Alt-Tab switching. AVG seems to like a lot of memory, avgrsx.exe in particular. If you are comfortable disabling your antivirus, you will may have to do it in msconfig's services tab rather than the startup one. Do make sure your power settings are set to "High Performance".

One thing which is interesting from your list (other than the number of applications Asus/Acer? seem to think consumers need to run) is that the Hercules console has two control panels "HDJSeriesCPL.exe" and "HerculesDJControlMP3.EXE". Do either need to be open once you've configured the settings you want to use?

You don't have to disable services and processes using msconfig (unless it's a kernel service like Antivirus and some Firewalls), another way is to create batch files which only close processes and services before you launch Virtual DJ and then open the program when you finish.

Here's an example of how to use the commandline (will need to run as admin) to turn off Windows Search and Defender for this session only:

SC STOP WSEARCH
SC STOP WINDEFEND

You can combine multiple commands like this in a textfile which must be saved with the file extension ".bat", this way you're only stopping processes and services on demand rather than permanently. This is useful for things like the Print Spooler or Web Client which you're probably not going to need whilst using Virtual DJ.

I've notice this, last week, I would of thought, I needed "HDJSeriesCPL.exe" for my RMX but not "HerculesDJControlMP3.EXE" aswell, strange is that.

Thanks for the advice, I'll wait till you have had time and gone though the list more in depth and given me a list of services to turn off. Could you do me a mini guide on the steps I will have to go though to turn these services of I don't need please, is the msconfig route good enough.

once again thanks,

Update- Disables the HerculesDJControlMP3.EXE (on cstoll advice) and this has brought down the CPU usage a little, may have been a conflict there between the to 2 control panels.

Disable the Windows indexing search and Windows Defender in services. This has help aswell.

I made a small .NET application last night which I'll upload if I clean it up a bit, it allows stopping processes from within it before launching Virtual DJ and then starting them up again afterwards. It also reports which programs have spent the most CPU time and Desktop Window Manager took up a large amount of time so you may consider turning that off.

From your list I came up with what I think are safe options to disable but maintain usability:

=== Should be OK to disable ===

SERVICE_NAME: AeLookupSvc
DISPLAY_NAME: Application Experience

SERVICE_NAME: EMDMgmt
DISPLAY_NAME: ReadyBoost

SERVICE_NAME: LightScribeService
DISPLAY_NAME: LightScribeService Direct Disc Labeling Service (if you never use Lightscribe to record DVD Labels)

SERVICE_NAME: PcaSvc
DISPLAY_NAME: Program Compatibility Assistant Service

SERVICE_NAME: Spooler
DISPLAY_NAME: Print Spooler (if you don't need a printer)

SERVICE_NAME: SysMain
DISPLAY_NAME: Superfetch

SERVICE_NAME: TabletInputService
DISPLAY_NAME: Tablet PC Input Service

SERVICE_NAME: TrustedInstaller
DISPLAY_NAME: Windows Modules Installer

SERVICE_NAME: UxSms
DISPLAY_NAME: Desktop Window Manager Session Manager (if you can live without Aero / 3D Desktop)

SERVICE_NAME: W32Time
DISPLAY_NAME: Windows Time

SERVICE_NAME: WerSvc
DISPLAY_NAME: Windows Error Reporting Service

SERVICE_NAME: WinHttpAutoProxySvc
DISPLAY_NAME: WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service

SERVICE_NAME: WSearch
DISPLAY_NAME: Windows Search

(If you want to go further, although best not to permanently disable, only per requirement from a batchfile:
Windows Defender, Windows Update, Security Center & Software Licensing, Distributed Link, SSDP,
WebClient, WlanAutoconfig {if wireless disabled})

=== Items which I'm not 100% sure on as other than AVG, most seem to be specific to your laptop ===

SERVICE_NAME: ALaunchService
DISPLAY_NAME: ALaunch Service

SERVICE_NAME: avg8emc
DISPLAY_NAME: AVG Free8 E-mail Scanner

msconfig is a fairly nice way to disable services permanently because it tells you the date disabled, so you can easily revert back any changes which have left you with undesirable behaviour such as some applications not being able to use the internet. However, the eXXXXXX services seem to be specific to your laptop so I don't know how they are going to behave, therefore I would recommend only turning them off by a bat file. It's easy to make one, make a new text file and save it as "services.bat", then before you run it, right click on it and choose as administrator.

The contents of the file may look like this:

@echo off
sc stop "eDataSecurity Service"
sc stop RichVideo

etc

Just repeating myself as i mentioned this prog many times before. ENDITALL its a free app. It shuts down services which are not required before you startup VDJ works on XP/Vista. Also you can taylor it to shut down other services you don't want.

Heres the link www.docsdownloads.com/enditall-1.htm

Andrew I can't thank you enough for the you've time spent on this, I like the idea of the .NET app you've created, if you could clean it it for me, so I could use it would be much appreciated mate.

@chriso thanks for the link mate, will have a look at that app when I get home.

I do I create this, Notepad?

Yep, any text editor you like. The important thing is that when you're saving it, for type choose "All Files (*.*)" and then add ".bat" at the end of the filename. You'll know if you've done it right because the logo once saved will look like a little cog on a screen instead of a notepad.

Andrew, good news I think, done as you instructed and everything has gone well. I've ran the program. Had a mix for 30 mins and the CPU usage now doesn't really go above 22% when I'm playing, which I'm pleased about.

The only time it spikes is when I load a track (which is to be expected) and then it only goes to just over 50%, as before it somethings hit 70%. Running on automix at the moment (to test it ) and it's set to play for just over a couple of hours, and again the CPU usage is lower in this mode, than it was before.

One thing, when I'm done with this neat little program how do I disable it, so I can run windows "normally"

Thanks mate.
