In virtualdj 8 in the effects section, I like to use the ....fade out....function, but it just chops the sound off rather than a gentle fade, iv'e tried different settings but it makes no difference...is it really supposed to do this? vdj is up to date as of 3.7.2014

That's a V7 effect that doesn't work well with V8.
