Tema: External GPU for Stems 2.0?
Hello!

I use a Microsoft Surface Pro 8 with a Pioneer DDJ-RZ (I recently switched from Rekordbox to VDJ) and obviously the SP8 is not suitable for realtime stems 2.0 separation.

I'm perfectly happy to prepare the stems in advance but it's super slow and makes my Surface Pro super hot.

Is there some kind of USB-C external GPU (or something else?) that I could plug into my Surface Pro when I'm preparing stems at home? I'm fine spending a good amount of coin on it, but I have no idea what I'm looking for. Is there something that would make an appreciable difference in the speed of preparation?

If the surface supports thunderbolt or usb4 then you can connect a matching enclosure to put a pci express gpu in yes

Thanks so much for your reply!

It does have Thunderbolt 4 over USB-C but I don't know much about computer techy stuff... is there something specifically that you could recommend? What's the best thing I can get for not too much more than $1000? And what sort of speed on the stems preparation could I see?

Don't have any personal recommendations, a quick google showed this overview:

The stems speed will depend on the GPU you put in. There's some estimates posted in other threads. (RTX 3060 should do around 25x real-time for example)

Do you think this one would work well? https://gpdstore.net/accessories/gpd-g1/. I like its form factor. But I'm not sure what specs I should be aiming for to get the best performance for Stems 2.0.

The 7600M XT should be around 20x real time

Thanks!

If I have all the stem files on an external SSD, to save room on my main drive, will they run fine?

Yes, I've got all my music on an external HDD (incl. Stems) and everything works fine

Cool, thanks!

One more question: How fast would a new 14" Macbook Pro with the M3 Pro chip compute stems 2.0?
