Hi All,
i have a hardware/mapping question. I searched but couldn't find any post regarding this. I use a DDJ800 with a 2020 MBP and VDJ. Great setup to use at gigs and I use stems quite a lot.
Lately I've been getting gigs in bars/clubs with a "normal" CDJ setup. I can DJ on CDJ's. But for now I bring the controller to the gig because I want to use VDJ with Stems. It would be a lot easier if I could just plug in de CDJ's.
So the question:
I know I can hook everything up with a LAN switch and just 1 USB cable from the DJM to the laptop. And use everything as a sort of controller.
BUT... is it also possible to use :
- Stems on the hot cue buttons
- A-BPM TR on the hot cue buttons
I saw there was an update for CDJ3000 which provided a button to switch between hot cues and stems. But can it also be used to go to other pad modes like A-BPM? And also, most venues in my enviroment use NXS2 setup. Has anyone managed to use other PAD modes like stems on this setup?
Hope anyone can help me :)

Stems work in CDJ2000NXS2 the same way as in CDJ3000.
In other words, yes it is possible to switch the "hot cue" buttons to control stems with them.
No, it is not possible to use the hotcue buttons on CDJs as "pads"
That's because of the device firmware. All CDJs, bind the hotcue points (and their colors) that you see on CDJ screen, with the hotcue buttons, and that makes using those buttons for something else extremely difficult.
As a simple example: If you want to switch hotcue buttons to a pad mode where all buttons are colored yellow, the cue-points on CDJ screen should also "update" to yellow in order to work properly..
Your best solution would be to get a subcontroller like DDJ-XP2
It's designed with people like you in mind, and it adds much more flexibility on a traditional CDJ+DJM setup.
PS: The XP2 will require it's own direct USB connection with your laptop.

Thanks for the reply and answers.
Turns out it will be more challenging than I thought. I actually use the colors a lot.
The XP2 sounds like a good alternative but the direct connection will be a problem as the new MBP only have 2 usb ports. I know have a powered hub on 1 port and the controller on the other. For now I’ll have to stick to the ddj with performance. I lease the MBP so every year I can swap… will have to get one with more ports next time

You can just connect the XP2 to the hub

Just to make it clear, I meant that DDJ-XP2 needs a USB connection with the MAC/PC
It cannot be used as part of LINK protocol (where you connect all CDJs+DJM via LAN and then use a single usb cable to run them all)
Also, while it is possible to connect a DDJ-XP2 on the USB A port of DJM-900NXS2 and therefore have some extra features on CDJ stand alone operation, it is not possible to transfer this connection to MAC/PC.
So, the DDJ-XP2 can be used as long as you can provide it a USB connection tto your MAC/PC
It doesn't matter if it's via a USB hub or not. However, if you're going to use a USB hub, we always recommend to use a powered one (one with it's own PSU) to make sure that power delivery to all the connected devices is within specifications.
