i dont think its not the same debate as vinyl vs.cd's. The main issue with cd's was you could not touch them or scratch making it impossible to get the same "vinyl" mixes when using cd's, that has changed a bit now. The issue i see with videos is that there is much more audio out there then videos, so in that case i would much rather make my own custom videos with my selected audio, that way you dont have to play all the wack vids just to play a song the crowd wants to hear and it makes your performance as a VDJ a different one from the next. I will not deny that video mixing is cool, infact i would love to see an example of just what videos can do. (ACW hint*) but i see videos as part of the experience like the lights, fog machine, etc. either way you still using an audio source. It's a new format that will depend on how popular and how much people like it in order to grow.

well lets get back to the question at hand, will VJs (DJs mixing videos) ever replace DJs. and i think the answer has to be no. having a separate VJ (who started calling video DJs VJs anyway, VJs have been around for ages and they are not the same) having a separate VJ and DJ is allways going to allow for greater creativity and complexity, 'two pairs of hands are better than one' its cool that one person can do the things they do but making remix videos and playing them as a dj is not going to be as exciting and spontanious as a live VJ.

VJs as know before VDJ Video captabilities are different things. You are a DJ I'm a DJ and know I'm mixing videos so I'm now a Video DJ not a DJ anymore?... Did I loose my DJ captabilities or I learn more tricks because of video mixing?...
I Agree that is a change and as we have people listening to the radio and other viewing the TV, it has to be the same with this. DJ are not to be going to dissapear, they only will do DJing with videos (if they are available) and if they want to.
Video DJ now is a fact that works as usual DJ, because I can still use my Vynils and TTs to mix videos. Nothing changes to me, only I use now video format (divx. mpeg, vob) also.

I know this is an older post but I have to come down on the side of Dj Xeo. I don't go to a club to watch an over size Idiot Box. I go to experience the "Voyage of Sound." To enhance the experience, lazers, strobes and other means of real time special effects such as sound effects and fog machines will be used. Maybe I am stuck in the stone age, but thats the way I like it.
And as dj-in-norway said, "There is room for everything."

So then nuff said ! Don't understand why this is such a question. Raw Bear, you just mentioned all the other props you find in clubs... fog, strobes, etc. Isn't it clear that the experience is an audio/visual one ??
Video is an extension of the visual aspect of the experience. If you've ever done it or seen it done properly, ppl don't sit and watch an idiot box. Screens aren't necessarily overside. Layout of the video monitors in the club or venue makes a difference too... picture Plasma/LCD screens placed tastefully in the decour. ppl tend to glance at the videos from time to time ... it just adds to their experience. As I mentioned before, experience puts you in a better position to comment.

i dont think that video is the same as lights and large wash effect lights as these are more ambient and do not require attention. i dont particularly give a monkies if the clubs i go to play videos or not, only that it points to a less 'live' experience if that makes any sence, and also the kind of club that its going to be. my main point is basicly to the initial question of 'are video DJs gonna repace DJs' and to that i say no. i think that VJ DJ and Lighting Engineer are separate rolls and when they are separate like this the experience provided is the most exiting and original. unless they make a way to directly plug your brain into equipment one person hasnt a hope of controlling all 3 simaltaniously with any degree of live non-automated spontinaity. i would welcome any technology that enables this but i have a feeling it just wont happen. the reason i advocate a dedicated VJ over the combines rolls is that VIS is a much better ambient effect than playing a songs video, meaning you dont need to look at them directly to enjoy their cotent and performance of their creation.

As I said before, I'm a DJ and now I could use video... I'm a Video DJ too! I don't loose any of my skills, I'm learning others and I have more options now. I take it. If the video is place in a good place, it rocks. Also is the same with audio... or you are one of those who place one speaker in a room and the other in another room, that's a mistake to have a full stereo experience. The same if the video is place in a wrong place.

lol you what? i understand that you can now do new things in VDJ but the question was, 'will video DJs replace DJs' not about stopping people having the option of video. no one is saying you shouldnt have video i just think that dedicated people do much better than a 'one-man-band' lol

IMHO VJs absolutely will be the norm. Audio-only is basically restricted to joggers and people riding in the front seat of a car. The only people I work for who do not want video are having really classy weddings. And even then it is rare that they specifically say no video. People love it. It is a lot more interesting than watching me, especially since I just stand around a computer now, pretending to hit buttons every now and then, lol.

Ok, my answer was not clear then... I found this topic question like this: Will TV replace Radio?...
the same for DJ's... But, I think there will be more demand for VJs.

i think that from a promotors standpoint a VDJ is better than a DJ and VJ because they get all the material that the punters know (the videos) its all been produced to a great level because the music business has TONS to drop on high budget everything and to top it all they only have to hire one guy. thing is thats in the low budget venues. if you go to a super club then they will have teams of people dedicated to their own little jobs and having one guy doing everything is next to impossible.
if your doing a wedding or a private party as a mobile dj or even in a slightly larger capacity then if they have the option of having video they would be silly not to and it will make the evening more enjoyable. if however your a headlining dj at a 10,000 cappacity venue and as your set you are going to play some videos your not going to do better than a dj left to concentrate on his own end of things as numerour other professionals see to theirs.
TV is better than radio, where it is possible to devote your attention to it, if your driving a car TV would be out of the question. if they invented some way to have the radio controll some disco lights in your car as you listened to a song then that would improve your experience of the activity. (quality idea now i think of it, dont even think about ringing the pattent office ive got there first! lol) this is because you dont need to focus your attention on it to apreciate it. it is ambient and it affects everything you see. TV replaced radio in the home because thats different to the car, there will allways be a time for radio and there will allways be a time for TV but thats not to say one is better than the other. what a ramble lol
