I am looking for the best way to organize my files with Virtual - I have 18,000 mp3's - any suggestions?

first of all, you can organize your files by kind of music: house, dance, techno, rock, pop and others...
then, you can part every folder by year. I have got 440 songs and I manage to organize these very well; I don't know how you can do with 18,000 tracks!!
work hard!
bye

inside each kind of music you should sort out into different criteria:

speed of the track, vocal or not, track you can play in club or only at home, etc.

for example, about my own collection in electronic music, I sort into like that:

\house
\progressive house & deep house
\vocal house (only vocal)
\deep vocal house (quite slow and/or mind-blowing)
etc

I organisze mine by genre first as well. I do all mine by folders in "my music". First by genre, then by artist then by song. It's very efficiant, I can load a hip hop song then load a rock song within 10- 30 seconds on the other deck if I so choose;^]

you olso can make a folder and put in there youre songs that you will use this week end update it every week :p

This thread might have some usefull information
Ewout

Here's an example of how one of my files looks...

My Music/Northern Spirit/SANG005/01 The Pressure (Main Mix).mp3

so in effect it's basically this...

My Music/Artist/Album/01 Title (Version).mp3

Where Album is the Cat No of the track.

i organize my music by bpm all in one folder so i can make it smooth into transition also doing remixes as well on the spot.

I'm now setting up my Folders:

Venue -

Opening

Fast -

Oldschool-

Slow Jams-

Birthdays-

Salsa-

Party Jams-

I am waiting to orgainize my music by "COLOR". Version 8 has this option.

Looking forward to a version release with the colored database. That will make music choices more efficient by the "at a glance" method. Play by the rainbow. Index on the hot music "RED". Mellow music "BLUE".

Then I'll use COLOR, BPM, & KEY. That will be the hot ticket.

We're coming up on a year since this was displayed at the Atlantic City Expo. Crossing fingers for an announcement soon.

i had that type of problem for over a month when i moved from cds to digital djing, and asked many friends djs about this, the best answer i got was, make it the WAY YOU like and find it more useful when u are on stage.

i've followed that, and changed it for more than 2 times, not all my music, but just made some subgenres, and to be honest i may change it again when i dont find something useful, to make it suit my needs!

take a picture of my english songs library, first of all i set them by greek or english, samples, and some mixed complinations i make in case a hardware problem occurs, they are all by genre or subgenres, depending on how they fit to my needs. i play all types of music.

and remember! sort them they way you feel right!u will use them and nobody else! so if u think a track is house or deep house put it there.

still very new to ddjing, i hope i\\\'ve helped you!

I have my folders setup like Getis also. I never make folders with the DJ software because if something goes wrong with the Data base, you will be in trouble. Making actual folders is Very good and secure.

I don't think you need to organise your files outside of VDJ at all.

As long as they're tagged and imported to your database, you can find anything anywhere.

I used to do it, years ago before I bought DJ software. I chose to put them in alphabetical folders.

Now I just make a new folder every 1,000 files - it doesn't matter what it's called or what's in it. The database and the tags enable me to find everything.

Yup same here........always organize my music in folders outside of VDJ. 1, if your database screws up it won't matter 2, I like everything the same no matter what software I use.

I dont.... i just use the search function inside the vdj !

i use rekordbox

Before I got VDJ I had all my music in folders of Genre, then Artist, then Album for iTunes organization. Since I have bought VDJ, and a laptop for just DJing I have my music in just Genres. I sub divided it for a bit by Genre then any artist that I had a few albums of I kept in their fold. I'll use Eminem for example, I have a few of his albums. So it used to be Rap/Eminem/album. Even since then I have grabbed any "popular" song and just put it in the Rap folder (then just title the files with the "artist - name of song"). The rest the Eminem songs I left in his folder. If need be I can look for a song using search, but since I don't actually do any Gig's I just look for songs that are close enough in BPM's to keep practicing beat matching. I have made all the genre folders star folders so they are easy to get to.

If I am in the middle of a dance song then want to go down to a slow R&B song then I use an effect like back spin or use my Mic (its off but I just talk into it) to transition ("This ones for the ladies" lol). I have also made playlists (a huge helping feature in VDJ Pro) to play the "good/popular" songs. Something I assume/hope some of the working Dj's here might use to set up their night.
