a nice 4.1, 5.1 sound card. I'd recommend using a firewire based sound card since it has it's own system interface, not colliding with the regular USB interface, which is shared by mouse, dac 3, external hard drives etc.. But, an USB sound card should work just fine anyways...
I'm running my laptop using USB interface: DAC 3, MS Intellimouse Explorer 2.0, Sound Blaster 2 Audigy NX and a Western Digital 250 GB. Works like a charm!

hm... could be some issues with shared IRQ, that I implied in the first reply; using a firewire sound card has it's benefits. If you have the chance, try a firewire based sound card. Lots of problems with sound cards has it's roots in shared IRQ, which is not really VDJ's fault, but a more of a MS flaw. A partner use this m-audio unit that eliminated the difficulties he had with his USB sound card: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FireWire1814-main.html

Another thought, if you use a hub, try plugging both directly into the side of the computer to test if that's the problem.
