Sometimes (actually, damn near all the time) I think VAT is a better system. Here in the US, every state and county (and sometimes cities, or even smaller, like how the French Quarter is 9% but the rest of New Orleans is 7%) can all have their own sales taxes, some with absurd fractions, such as 4.225% in Missouri. Then, it's hard to tell what's covered, and what isn't. Some states cover all foods, some only foods in restaurants, some cover snack foods with different taxes than other foods. Some internet sites charge tax if you're in the same state as them, and some don't. Some charge tax anyway. It's all much too complicated sometimes. It should all be like Oregon, which has no sales tax.
