i would recommend spicing up the slide show a little
a gradual zoom in on the photos would do wonders instead of just static photos.
also how about other transitions like slide up-down-left-right instead of just a simple fade....

Slideshow already have length (duration) and Fade (fade time) sliders and Folder select and Shuffle and video buttons
and yes some transitions (maybe like internals ones for video) may be fine as well as a position (like cover or grab or camera or showlogo8 have)

kind of ken burns effect would be nice on the slideshow
and also, transform controls or size & position controls, to allow the user to decide how much of the screen the slideshow takes up

Since build 5630 you can select which transition to be used for slideshow.
