when we create custom buttons that we like, but we have more than the standard 4 buttons, would be nice to be able to show / hide the four we want to use ,but keeping the other ones in the background

Use a skin with more buttons like Blocks for example
 
custom buttons can have variations, won't that do what you're after?
 
how do i do that?
