When I rate my songs, I often find songs that are between 3 or 4 or between 4 and 5 stars. A wish would be to have half stars also! :-D

While I understand your wish and your background, I believe that you should just adapt to use what is there.

And I explain:
Right now you can rate songs on a "5 different values system".
Including "halves" makes it a "10 different values" system. You have 10 different values to pick.
But the again a song "could be" 7,5 starts (out of 10) or 4,25 stars (out of 5).
So let's make it to have 20 possible values!
Then again, why stop there ? A song could be 18.5 stars out of 20 (equivalent to 4.625 stars out of 5).
Make it accept 40 values ? Make it accept any "real" number ?

What I'm trying to say is that there has to be a limit on how many different ratings you can have.
Generally speaking 5 is a good simple limit for most cases.
Yes, there might be an odd song here and there that fits somewhere "in between" those values, but just make it a persistence choice to either always upgrade or downgrade the song in those cases.

Personally if a song "falls somewhere in between" some values, I always upgrade it to the higher value.
So if a song is "4.125 or 4.25 or 4.5 or 4.75 e.t.c." stars, I always set it to 5 stars.
 
Actually I would that the current system allows SIX ratings, because you have the option of not assigning any stars at all, so 0-5 = 6.

If I rate my tracks, I usually just assign five to the very best, and don't bother with anything in between.
 
Track coloring using the Tag Editor can probably help with these "in between rating" comparisons (because I agree with @PhantomDeejay and @groovindj - why stop there, you can divide infinitely as needed) - the color scale is much more granular (although at some point it becomes very difficult to distinguish two very close colors).
 
Of course, numbers are infinite. But for me it is enough with 5 stars, and to make it more versatile it would be perfect (for me) with half stars also, it is very common. But those who prefer to keep rating a 4.5 star song to a 5 star can continue to do that even if it become possible to make them half also.
I can´t see any valid arguments against this.
I do not see it as a valid argument that numbers are infinite...who thought they weren't?
 
Tbh, not being mean or anything but this is purely a your preference thing, it's not a deficiency of the software.

Some software have half divisions, some don't, some don't even have ratings and I and probably many others have used examples of software in each category for music organization without a problem.

We already gave a reasons why it could get out of hand - someone else could give the same argument for more and more divisions - if you don't agree that's okay, but that doesn't mean the reason isn't valid.

At the end of the day, the devs have seen your request (one actually replied) and its up to them to consider implementing it or not.
 
For such high end software, I am amazed why VDJ does not implement a better rating system. Yes, 5 stars are enough, but is it so difficult to show empty starts ad with simple press to choose how many stars to give. I dont know why but on my laptop, SHIFT + 5 does not work. SHIFT +F5 still not work and rating is not shown.
 
Where did you get that random Keyboard shortcut from?

Pretty sure that's not in the manual, or in the default keyboard shortcuts for VirtualDJ, or for any music organization software that I use.

You could easily set a keyboard shortcut for setting the rating with the 
rating
verb for the currently browsed track or track in the active deck, so I don't exactly know what your issue is.

That would make sense. The level of confidence the responses are coming in with is disturbing thought.

I'm genuinely curious as to the criteria you use to rate your songs; and why you would want to in the first place.

I appreciate this is a very subjective matter.
