Is there a reason why not all of them seem to do anything- it's not really a major problem, but there's a few cool ones that don't work at the moment.

Depends on their complexity. Some are made for video editing programs, and some are not simple plugins, but kinda "host" for a range of plugins/settings.
VDJ only support simple live video freeframes effects.

And some are made for crossfading from one video to another, and this is to complex for VDJ, so they cannot be used.
