What about a WAIT function
For text that will fit within the screen (maybe even the proposed countdown) it will scroll in to centre and then pause for that period of time before scrolling out.

BLINK
Any text within a set of markers would Blink/Flash. Cheesey yes, but you just know at some point it's gonna come in handy.

That would work well for a new year's countdown..
 
The wait shouldn't be difficult to do, I already calculate the width of the text rectangle anyway so I know when it's off the screen - I could probably add that for the next release.

The blink would be slightly harder as I would have to chop up the rendered text into segments. I'll consider it for a future feature though :)
