Couple of points here - the first being that this is an old thread.
Firstly xmarcs: You're using LE and are thus very much restricted in what you can do in terms of skins, plugins and so on. The bundled versions are essentially free anyway!
Secondly Kiyosi:
1. Atomix is not 'behind the times'. They are in fact very much ahead in many areas.
2. XML is neither annoying nor hard. I can't see this format changing in the immediate future. It has the added benefit of speed - I've had Traktor lag out when updating tags in large MP4 files for example.
3. I agree that higher resolution default skins would be nice. Personally I use my own so it's no issue to me however.
4. Like thats a big concern? Seriously?
5. Plugins are generally user produced. Thanks for calling my free work junk. It's well known that Mac plugins lag behind. Windows VDJ has the added of supporting VST so if anything that makes Traktor look like junk.
6. Mac users are not an afterthought. As I said in point 5 plugins are user contributed - you have no right to demand anything from the userbase. This 'entitled' attitude annoys the hell out of me.

1 - yes, atomix is ahead of the pack in terms of its Sampler... the Kontrol S4 and Traktor 2 think it's so new, but VDJ has had live sampler forever
2 - the benefits of id3-based cues far outweighs the cons in my opinion. the ease of having cues intrinsically associated with the file itself makes life a lot easier for transferring libraries, putting libraries on new disks, mac-to-pc or pc-to-mac switches, etc.
3 - really, the default skins, out of the box, should support the entire Macintosh line. that's decent to the mac userbase.
4 - no, that's not a concern to be honest, lol
5 & 6 - the Mac plugins are far behind and generally of low quality. they could use a facelift & atomix could tweak their current plugins and add some more. competitors are certainly improving in this area, and so should VirtualDJ. i am VERY MUCH SO entitled to top notch software after spending hard earned money!
and yes, without VST support on Macintosh, i really do feel that Mac users are left behind. Traktor for Mac supports VSTs, comes with 3x the effects, and also comes with re-sized skins for all the current Macbook and Macbook Pro resolutions. added VST support, a full range of default skins, and a move to non-XML DB would vastly improve the program.
Serato loses many of its users because many djs want:
- a really good built in sampler
- the ability to use a variety of effects & VSTs
VDJ has moslty triumphed over Serato in these regards, but Traktor is giving it a run for it's money.
i would like nothing more than to see VDJ improve in some areas so that more users chose VDJ over other programs.
personally, i really want VST support, to recall loops, a 1680x1050 skin (without having to make one myself), etc.

1. There are a million other things VDJ is ahead with too. Video support being one. MIDI/HID support another. Rewire another. Plenty of things here :)
2. Thats just your opinion though. Storing it in the tag has the downside that other software can damage/remove that information.
3. They support the same as the PC though, my laptop had 1920x1200 4 years ago. I dealt with it by making my own - you can always download one.

4. Glad to hear it!
5 & 6. You're not listening to me. At all. A lot of the plugins are user created by people like me. I don't work for Atomix and as such there isn't a massive drive for me to develop for a platform I don't own, use or have any desire to use. There are additional complications when porting plugins for the Mac platform and it's not as simple as you seem to think. I've been working on a port of ScrollText for months now.
As for you being entitled I beg to differ. You bought the software as is, not as is-going-to-be unless you were promised said target. Trial versions were available and you had access to the forum to ask pre-sales questions.
I get very very little reward for developing plugins - it would be easy enough for me to call it a day.
Ultimately if you have requests for the software then the wishes & new features forum is the best place for them. If you have plugin requests there is a plugin forum for that purpose. I won't respond to requests for 'better' or 'more' plugins, but I often respond to specific requests.

I spent hours MIDI mapping my NES Game Pad, and I really wish all software supported HID.
I'm not sure how other software can damage ID3 tag information, unless you want it to:
iTunes, MixedInKey, etc... they don't mess with your tags unless you tell them to.
Serato and Traktor store their info in mutually exclusive areas/ways:
I've never seen an mp3 with Serato AND Traktor tags have any issues.
I could be wrong, but I just fail to see any real advantages with XML.
Many DJs have a main computer with a huge library, where they make their cues/loops...
then they might transfer ~100 songs to a USB key for DJing with Serato that night, on the club laptop or friend's computer.
Using ID3 would be much better in my opinion, but yes, that's just my opinion.
XML vs ID3 alone is enough to make me question switching, but I really don't want to.
I bought this software expecting that Atomix would improve it over time.
They have, in many regards. Adding the Filter knob for each deck mimics Traktor is is VERY appreciated!
User-created scripts, FX, skins, etc... WELL DONE to all those who support Virtuald, BUT:
Atomix ought to have a decent slew of scripts, FX, and skins for BOTH mac and PC users right out of the box.
I expect that.
I also expect that with time, VDJ will improve in the ways that Traktor, Live, and Serato have.
Yes, I do expect my $350 license to keep me updated with new versions of improved VirtualDJ.

If you're retagging its possible to lose the data, and you still need a database of some form to search anyway. I'm just saying it could happen, thats all.
As for the purchase/update thing, if that is what you expect then you might want to examine the Traktor upgrade policy more closely. Purchasing of a product does not automatically entitle you to improvements...
You knew what VDJ had right out of the box and you paid your money for that.
