Hi there,
im thinking about changing my hdd over to a solid state, has anyone done this?
my laptop really has the bare minimum on it: xp pro, vdj, dpc latency checker, and mixed in key.
along with drivers for keyboard mouse screen, usb's and midi controller, that is literally it. all my music is stored on an external drive.
i have 3gb ram and a dual core processor.
will a ssd really make that much differance to the running of the laptop, and whats the smallest drive i could get away with (im on a budget)
thanks, brian.

I came across some articles with some information about ssd's for you. Its really up to personal preference of what you like to use. Ssd's might be more dependable becuase thier is no disk being written onto so if you drop it it wont skip up like say if you had a regular harddrive.
Here you go let me know if this helps with your decision

Hi, thanks for those, i think im going to go down the road of dual bootable as i dont use the dvd drive in the laptop at all, and by the sounds of it i can actually save some money by doing it, 1 being i dont have to buy another laptop for personal use, 2 it will speed up a little, its not running on the limit but when loading songs isnt far off.
so again thanks for the links and im loving @satellite! on your page!

No problem, yea having two drives would really optimize your laptop, the smaller, faster one with the operating system and the bigger drive with all the music on it. I use that kind of set up for my home desktop.
And thanks man enjoy and keep following i should have new stuff this weekend if i can get my bug fixed :D

I installed a fancy Intel X-25M 160gb SSD installed in my old laptop about a year and a half ago and to be honest I didn't notice a difference on track loading time.
I did notice a difference when it came to loading windows (Way faster start times) and when loading heavy programs like adobe photo shop. But with VDJ I really didn't notice a difference since VDJ already has a pretty good start time and like I said I really didnt notice a difference when loading the tracks. But then again I did have a pretty fast computer to begin with, the difference could be more dramatic in slower systems.
If your going to get an SSD I would recommend Intel, Intel is the main OEM supplier of SSDs to companies like Apple and HP. I also remember when I was researching my SSD purchase that all the cheaper SSD brands had problems where they would eventually slow down due to a Jmicron controller part that was installed on virtually all of the cheaper SSDs.
These cheaper brands may have newer models that have addressed the problems, if your going to consider a cheaper non Intel SSD I would recommend the OCZ (OCZ are not that much cheaper than intels but they seem better quality than all the others) but get the newer models, these newer models have a "2" after the model name like VERTEX 2 because these models claim to have fixed the Jmicron controller problem. I have not owned OCZ SSD drives only Intels but Ive read some pretty good reviews on the OCZ drives.
Another option to consider are hybrid SSD drives like the Seagate Momentus XT which have a small amound of SSD memory combined with a traditional hard drive. These drives will house all your frequently accessed programs in the SSD portion of the drive speading up the load times of these programs. These drived dont cost and arm and a leg like the regular SSDs.
I dont recommend you go cheap on an SSD, you will more likely get an SSD that has these faulty Jmicron controllers installed on them, if your trying to be cheap go with a hybrid SSD drive.
Do lots of research, youtube and google will be your friends....make sure you check out the load times of the SSD drives once they have data written on them because they are all fast when they are new with no data but the cheap ones slow down dramatically once they have data written on them.

To be honest as far as VDJ is concerned there will be no discernable difference. Tracks may load slightly quicker but that's about it.
Upgrading to a 7200 RPM HDD is cheaper and will not degrade over time like SSD drives do.

Thanks guys, this is the kind of input I wanted, lots of opinions.
@keith... My concern with my laptop at the minute is that when I load a track the cpu usage goes up right into the red, this said my friends brand new vaio does the same but loads slightly quicker, is it worth changing over JUST for the slight increase in load speed, so that its in the red for a few seconds less? However all of my music is on a high spec 1tb external so will it make any difference whatsoever??
Thanks for the input peeps!

The processor going in the red is not an issue. This happens on a lot of PC's and is normal. I'm pretty sure VDJ does not use more than one core to spread the load so multicore processors won't make any difference.
Having a faster drive won't speed up the load time, it's the speed of your processor is that is the issue here.
No point spending money as the load time will stay the same unless you get a faster machine.

SSD is more of a read/write issue. That's where it will speed things up, where it has to load the program from the hard drive to your ram for it to run.
I will be upgrading to an SSD for several reasons. The cost is coming down and Intel is not the only game in town, foolishness. That's like saying Mac Laptops and Desktops are the only things you should use for DJ'ing, BS, nonsense, hogwash. Crucial, Kingston and OCZ have given better value for SDD and faster in some classes for less money.
All this concern over durability of SSD's is also really funny. FYI but most Enterprise Servers have them now... Google wasn't broken was it?
VDJ does not take advantage of multi-core processors, especially when it comes to analyzing the audio tracks (horribly slow). SSD will not improve track loading per say, I'll be moving my entire collection to a media server in the near future, forget CD's and large drives, I just want a fast 128GB SSD in here as this is also a general purpose laptop. All music or video over network.... Nothing on the physical drive.

High CPU usage while loading a song is normal - You want a song to load as fast as possible, so VirtualDJ uses most of the spare CPU. It should never have any impact on the playing song unless your computer has performance issues.
VirtualDJ IS a multi-threaded application and is optimised for multiple processors/cores. However, song analysis only currently takes place on a single processor/core at present. When playing live, this is not a bad thing because it leaves the other processor(s) free to deal with the playing song and the one you are cuing up.
Multi-threaded song analysis may be possible in a future version - Please ask in the wishes and new features forum if you would like to see this added: http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/18/Wishes_and_new_features.html
