Tópico: Where Cue Point Stored...???

Este tópico es antiguo y puede contener información incorrecta para la nueva versión.

Hi everyone,

I have been working with VDJ for over a year now and I'm more then happy with the software however...

I'm looking to get a new laptop since this one is a bit old now and starting to show it's age...

When I install VDJ on the new laptop and connect my external hard drive with all my music will I lose my cue points...???

Just did a quick check here and I think I understand that I will lose my cue, bpm, etc...

What can I do before hand to help reduce my work and continue with dj'ing...???

Thanks and I know there's someone here that can help.

(I hope)

as far as im aware, all your cue points are stored in your database. but to be on the safe side, copy the entire Virtual dj folder from your documents and replace the one on your new laptop after install.

this will also put back in place any mappers, effects, transitions, play lists, track listings, history etc. that you had on your current laptop. thus your vdj will be just as it is now.

as for loosing your bpm's, this wont happen due to the data beingstored in your database on your external hdd. if your drive has been added to the database vdj creates a file on that particular drive. it does this for each drive seperatly.

Wow, Blulite sounds easy...

However, I couldn't follow your last statement...

"if your drive has been added to the database vdj creates a file on that particular drive. it does this for each drive seperatly."

It is nice to know I should be back in business in no time...

Thanks Blulite

BTW: I did a search in the directory to see in there any supporting files like a xml or something but I couldn't find any that's why I posted this question. Thanks again...

If your entire music collection is stored in an external Hard Drive, then all the infos of your songs are stored in the local Database xml file located in the root directory of that HD. Simply install Virtualdj to your new computer and plug your external HD.

However it is strongly recommended to backup and copy/paste the entire MyDocuments\Virtualdj folder in order to avoid losing Playlists, Modified addons (skins, mappers etc) and the Database of C: drive in case you have any music files there (Cached from Netsearch etc).

my last statement being worded a bit oddly, is basically saying ...each drive you use for your music or video has its own database saved on it by vdj. this database holds all bpm, id3, cue etc. data. therefore it will always be available to any system you plug the drive into.

Here is what I understand now with both your help:

If all my music is located on my external hard drive (which in my case it is) here is what I need to do:

>>> Run the vdj exe instill on my new laptop.
>>> Connect my external hard drive.

And I'm good to go...

However to ensure that I get everything. After running the install copy/paste vdj directory from my old to my new laptop.

There is two locations where I find vdj information:

>>> One I find under C:/Documents and Settings/caddog/my documents/VirtualDJ
>>> The second I find under c:/Program Files/VirtualDJ/VirtualDJ702

Do I copy both or just one...???

Thanks guys...

BTW: Not knowing any better, on my last upgrade I thought I would create a directory denoting the version (VirtualDJ702). I don't know if this was a good idea or not...

you ar almost correct,

>>> Run the vdj exe instill on my new laptop.
>>> Transfer C:/Documents and Settings/caddog/my documents/VirtualDJ
>>> Connect my external hard drive.

and your good to go.

as for naming the directory after the version number it doesnt make any difference, it is a good thing to do if you have, like some people, more than one version installed.

Thanks again Blulite,

I feel so much better about getting a new laptop now...

I was very worried that I need to re-build all my cue's, bmp's, etc...

I hope this answers others with the same thought of moving onto newer hardware...

Thank you, thank you, thank you... :)

Greetings,

I've always wondered why we have info in Program Files and also in My Documents. Is there a reason for this split? To me it would be easier to have everything under Program Files. Just wondering.

This split makes moving from my studio PC to my gig Laptop a lot more work. This is especially true now that I have XP on one. and VISTA on the other.

I would love an easier way to do work on my Studio PC, then clone that to my Gig PC... then after I play (I'm always modifying the database with new/changed cue points...etc)... shove that back into the Studio PC.

I've been lazy lately and preview music on the Studio PC and then have to duplicate that on the other. Too much time involved. I know, I know, I should build some batch files, use a flash stick, and plug, unplug, plug, unplug,... da da da.

Guess it's time to get that operation working again. I stopped when I had to convert my laptop back to VISTA from XP due to video issues.

So now I'm mismatched in operating systems. It just would be nice to have a built in APP to do this job easily.

if you read the thread, you will notice that all you have to do is move the data from the folder in documents from one pc to the other.

it doesnt matter what os your running all the data is transferable.

if your editing your database then try using an external hdd then the database will always be on that drive and will migrate to any system you plug it into.

as for previewing audio on one then messing around on the other, just copy the m3u file from documents > virtualdj > tracklisting and bluetooth it from one to the other or drop it on your external drive.

the way you have been working is completely screwed up. the vdj folder in documents was put there for a reason. it stores all the info we need for not onlymigration but shareing between systems or networks. you can copy and replace the the entire file if you want rather than just parts of it. just copy the entire file, drop it on your external, then replace it on your other system. once youve played, do the same again.

this way you will always have a backup and the same data on both systems.
