In Itunes, there is an option to convert files that won't play to mp3 format...is there such an option using virtualdj?

No, there is no such option and it is not necessary. VirtualDJ can play MP4 files providing they are not Apple DRM protected (.m4p)
However, your older version of VirtualDJ Home Edition does not have support for the latest MP4 codecs so this may be why you are having problems.
