Hello,
I am wondering what an upfader actually is. I've seen it multiple times in discussions about what the best mixing method would be (crossfader vs upfader).
I just use my laptop, I don't own any DJ equipment.
Thanks in advance

they mean the volume control that is independant of the other deck, crossfaders are for scratching and noobs who aren't listening to what they are doing... use the volume (upfader) as you have more control over the output for better more precise transitions.

Ummm, mixing with the cross fader is not "for noobs who aren't listening to what they are doing", it's just a different technique, but no less effective or easier. Every DJ has their preference and I'm not really sure why you consider it a "noob" technique. Please explain.

a standard crossfader is about 8 cm in length, a standard volume fader is usually larger at around 10cm in length, however there us two of them so you have a combined travel of around 20cm to adjust the sound making it more precise for actual mixing, as well as being able to independantly adjust the levels of one deck without affecting the other. Whenever I see someone mixing with well a crossfader it isn't electronic music they are playing, its hip hop, that's fine as you need fast cuts between songs. but if I ever see someone mixing dance music with a crossfader, it is always a noob on youtube who does a 2 second transition with one hand in the air trying to look cool completely avoiding anything else on the mixer.
In my years as a dance club dj, never have I seen anyone that knows what they are doing using the crossfader to mix the set, cuts and fills yes, mixing no.

I was taught to mix with the crossfader and I spin hip hop on the other hand my partner mixes with the upfaders. It just boils down to your personal taste.........
And for me its the crossfader ;-)

I see what you're saying, and you make valid points which I totally agree with. Mixing house with the crossfader may not be as precise but with a skilled 'non-noob' hand it can be done very effectively.
