Hey there forum! I'm new to DJing and I would very much like if you could solve some of my questions... We are planning on doing a party with some frineds and they assigned me the role of the DJ. Thus, I downloaded VDJ Pro 7.0.3 along with Mix.Lab 3.1 skin... Now you guys I'm getting nervous over this. Imagine if something goes wrong with the music in front of all the ppl dancing... omg.... Please I need advice... First and foremost is there a way to put all of my songs inside the VDJ instead of having to drag/drop every single song from an outside folder? Secondly mixing is a bit confusing... All I do is just hit play in the second song while it is muted, hit sync and then raise the song's loudness and drag the third crossfade bar towards the song that will now play while slowly muting the previous song... Is that a good technique? Another question I have for you is what format will grant me the best sound quality as well as if I need an external soundcard. I have a pretty new laptop which will be the "tool" of my DJing and that's it... As far as effects are concerned, are the ones already installed sufficient? And is mix.Lab a good choice? Guys, remember this will be a party with lots of alcohol in a small room-like place... Nothing special or extremely important. I need basic advise and answers to my previous questions... Guys please answer al of them if you have time... If this is the wrong place to be posting this therad, I apologize... Hurry and help me out... There's no much time left and I need to practice too!

P.S.: I download youtube videos and use anyVideoConverter to convert them to music. If you have any better suggestions please tell me.

Well first of all, you are using an out-of-date version which if you have downloaded it from somewhere without purchasing it from us, you are using the software illegally. With the exception of VirtualDJ Home FREE (Which is not for commercial use) VirtualDJ is not free software. Illegal versions are usually out-of-date and may also contain viruses, spyware, etc. You say that you are using v7.0.3, which is both an old and out-of-date version with known bugs that have been fixed. There have been many improvements, bug fixes and new features since then. We are currently on version v7.1

Second, you are using YouTube videos, which is both illegal for public performance and also in general will be poor quality.

Please see: http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/Illegal%20Pirate%20Version.html

To ensure that your gig goes smoothly, we would recommend that you do the following:

(1) Purchase and use a legitimate version of the software: http://www.virtualdj.com/buy/index.html - If you like VirtualDJ, please support the software and its future development.

(2) Purchase good quality music and/or videos from legitimate sources such as iTunes, PromoOnly, etc. You could also subscribe to premium membership: http://www.virtualdj.com/products/membership.html (You should not rely on this as your sole source of music though.)

(3) Ensure that your computer is optimised and free from unnecessary and/or illegal software that might affect its performance and/or could cause it to crash in the middle of your gig. Please see http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/Performance%20Issues.html

(4) Make sure that you have a backup device ready to go should you experience any problems at any point (E.g: Mix CD cued up in a CD player, iPod with suitable playlist, etc.)

(5) Practise as much as possible before your gig. Keep things simple to begin with until you get more experienced. Don't go over the top with effects, samples, etc. Most people just want to hear the music!

so which version would you suggest for me?? I hear that 7.0.5 is the most stable... Also, is Mix.Lab 3.1 a good skin? and finally where can i learn all the techniques and what all of the options of the window do?

If you don't need to use MIDI controllers or full-screen video, then you should purchase either VirtualDJ Basic or VirtualDJ Broadcaster (This is a more cut-down/limited version, but cheaper.) Otherwise, you will need to purchase the full VirtualDJ Professional. You can see a comparison of the features of each version on the following page: http://www.virtualdj.com/products/comparison.html

MixLab v3.1 is now quite an old skin (Although still popular) that was designed for VirtualDJ v5 and hasn't been updated by its author for some time. Newer skins allow access to features that have been added to the software since v5, including support for more than 2 decks. Once you have purchased, you can choose from a vast library of user-made custom skins http://www.virtualdj.com/addons/skins.html - We would recommend using one that has been created for VirtualDJ v7.x to ensure that you have access to new features in newer versions of the software.

When you purchase, you will always get the most recent version of the software (As well as future updates when they are released.) This is currently v7.1 which is the same as 7.0.5b but with a few minor bug fixes, a new feature (Cloudlists) and support for new MIDI controllers added in over the past year. It's unlikely that you will have any problem with this, but if you do, you can contact support and the previous v7.0.5b can be made available to you.

For learning VirtualDJ, the best place to start is the user manuals and our FAQ/wiki pages. There are also some tutorials in this forum (Mix Lessons) that can help:
