I have Win8 & VDJ 7.3 = no problem

externi HDD ? long loading? sleep HDD ?

Windows 8 and 7.3 here and no such problem.

Whoever tries to mix videos with Win8, have in mind that most of the video cards have no native Win8 drivers yet, and the performance may not be good enough.
VirtualDJ runs fine under Win8, but the overall performance is also depending on your hardware. Its too early IMHO to play live using Windows 8. I would wait for a few months for the OS to become more stable and all manufactures update their drivers.

the 2 mayor graphic card players, ati (AMD) and nvidia, both have windows 8 32 and 64 bit drivers, all windows certified

Where to start, hmmmm........

I upgraded to Windows 8 32bit version the week it came out. I have an Apple Macbook Pro i7 bootcamped. I was using W7 32bit and due to partition space restrictions I ended up with the 32bit version of W8 on a clean install. I noticed immediately that the video output was much higher definition than W7, even been distributed through composite video.

I allowed W8 to automatically update (yeh, yeh, I know I shouldn't have). Everything worked reasonably well until last week. I say reasonably because the scrolling of the waves at the top of the screen were not as smooth as in W7. Midweek there was an update to W8 with a number of 'essential' patches.

While tinkering around at home always looking to improve, I tested my system with the DPCLatency checker. To my horror I had a number of regular red spikes. I then tried using an old version of the Game Booster to shut down background services. Apparently there was a new major update to this program, so, downloaded and registered it. Tried it and found it stopped my red spikes, but, unfortunately, it also stopped my ASIO output. Worked OK with the laptop speakers but not ASIO. So had to uninstall it.

At my residency on Friday and Saturday I had a couple of sound dropouts, loading the players (all video) was very slow and the scrolling waveforms were really bad stuttering along. I'm a wave rider and hardly ever use headphones to mix. They were so bad that, using headphones to set a queue point, moving the waveform back and forth was stuttering and not smooth. Nervously got through the gigs OK, but, then started thinking 'should I go back to W7', if so, should I switch to 64bit (I've got 8gb RAM available). So many questions and not looking forward to a week of re-installing software and setting everything up for next weekend. Got another gig tonite in the same residency so wouldn't do anything til Monday.

When I got home started messing around with the setup trying to figure out why things had got so bad. Decided to uninstall the Windows updates from last week and amazingly my red spikes disappeared. So now automatic updates have been disabled, it was progress.

NOW THE BIG SOLUTION!!!!

I have been using DJ Formatt's MixLab 4 skin since it was released around 2 years ago. It is not a native size for my laptop and I normally have it expanded to fill the screen. During messing around I set it to its normal size and suddenly noticed the scrolling waves were smooth. I switched to the VDJ default skin for my native screen size 1440x900 and everything ran smooth as silk!!! Tried switching between them and every time I expanded the Mixlab 4 skin the system just about fell over stuttering and slow loading of the players, etc.

Obviously the Mixlab skin was not developed for W8, but, I was really surprised how much this affected my system, even down to loading the players!!! I'm sure DJ Format will be developing a new skin for version 8 but for now I must return to the standard VDJ skin. My system is now running as smooth as silk and can't believe the huge difference. All this with the DPCLatency checker running in the background with no red spikes just lots of yellows.

Problem seems to be solved. Looking forward to a trouble free gig tonite. :-)

I've noticed this too - the performance hit caused by resizing a skin is staggering. It is not well implemented at all.

In the end, I had to use the Skin Resizer tool to recreate my favourite skins in the native resolution size.

I believe Virtual DJ 8 is supposed to fix this problem by using a UI similar to Ableton, where controls are repositioned rather than resized.

Wow! Did my Sunday night residency 2 1/2 hour gig with, wait for it, 1ms buffer on my MC6000!!!

Couldn't believe it as I've been running with 18 to 21ms latency. I did have one video hiccup and sound dropped near the start and the next video I was setting up in headphones slowed the playing video down. So, stopped it and changed it for a different video to mix into. Had no more problems after that for the rest of the night.

Gonna have a mess around with those two videos to see if can be recreated. I'm happy that I will not need to change operating systems or anything like that. Couldn't believe the skin could cause so much trouble.

It's been stated many many many times in the past that skin resizing in v7 can load up the CPU and is IMHO a very bad thing to do.

Always use a skin to match your resolution :)

Yeh, I knew that Scott, however, I've never had a problem in 2 years with Windows 7.

It has only shown how bad it can be in Windows 8.

Sorted now.

Perhaps the resolution is different in the Win 8 video drivers.. Making the skin resize different.

Hmmm..... now you could be right there.

There is a significant improvement in the video output with Windows 8.

It's like going from ordinary output to High Definition.

Sadly more problems this weekend;

Friday near the end of my gig I noticed some crackles in quiet parts of tunes. When I got home I messed around with various settings, I made the ASIO drivers = 11ms as recommended by Denon, switched off Ultra-latency in the Soundcard section.

In the Performance section I set the;
Soundcard = Auto
Scratch (don't use this ever) = Optimise for Latency
Master Tempo = Advanced Stretching (Master Tempo is permanently switched on)
Skin Resizing = Fast Resizing
48k Conversion = Quality Resampling

I then ended up mixing Trance music constantly for 6 hours!!! No sound crackles at any time. I did notice that my laptop ran a lot cooler than when I'm gigging with videos. Heat could be an issue, I always gig with it sitting on a cooling plate with 2 cooling fans running constantly underneath the laptop.

At my gig after 20 minutes, I was playing a video in the right player and had loaded a video in the left player. The playing video (with a busy dance floor) start to slow down and play at half speed. Couldn't see any logical reason for this. Had to push the fader up for my iPod that is always playing in the background. While the iPod was playing I changed the ASIO from 11ms to 21ms. I then went to the Performance section and ticked the Safe Mode box.

I then loaded another video and switched back from iPod and continued with no more problems for the rest of the night.

I will use these settings for tomorrow night for my short gig.

If I have many more problems like this then I may have to return to Windows 7 as I have a busy Christmas and New Year coming up.

Soulman, do you use the pitch bend buttons on the MC6000?

I noticed the "hang" while mixing videos last night, first night out with Win8 & NS7FX. Didn't notice it initially but it seemed to get worse last hour of a 6 hour gig.

No, don't use them at all.

I have reprogrammed the Shift+Vinyl button to reset pitch as I will never use the vinyl scratch facility.

Cheers

Everything worked fine at tonite's gig.

I did run the Gamebooster utility to shut down background services before I started VDJ.

Had 2 video gigs last weekend with my new SSD I7 Quad Vaio with Windows 8. Ran flawless with VDJ 7.3, Pioneer DJM 900 & a pair of V7's!

Well, this weekend I had a long Friday night as we had a later license than usual. Did a full 6 hour nightclub gig with no problems.

Last night (Saturday) after 3 hours the playing video slowed down exactly like it did last week with a full dance floor. I pushed the fader up for my iPod backup and to my total horror................ nothing............ jeezzz!!!!! Checked in my headphones and the iPod was OK, but, no output from the MC6000, OMG never had this before. Luckily there was a CD playing in the clubs CD player so put the volume up on that.

Tried various things, used the iPod cable to bypass the MC6000 by plugging into the laptop headphone output and direct into the club mixer. I changed the configuration in VDJ from MC6000 output to laptop speakers and........... nothing........... very weird. As a last resort I shut down VDJ and rebooted W8 completely. I then had output from the laptop speakers, so, tried re-configuring and the MC6000 was working again. Restored everything back to way it was and continued trouble free for the last hour of my gig.

I don't understand why the iPod didn't output through the MC6000 as it's an analogue connection. That was one of the reasons I bought this mixer/controller. All I can think of is, this points to the Denon Driver not being fully compatible/tested with W8 and maybe corrupted the connection with the laptop in some way. Although, I can normally shut down the laptop and the analogue mixer parts continue to work mic/iPod.

With the busy Christmas season starting I can't take anymore risks and have decided enough is enough, time to reinstall Windows 7. I ran Windows 7 for 2 years Bootcamped on this Mac with no major headaches.

Now...... the dilemma........ Windows 32bit or 64bit? I used W7 in the past with the 32bit version, but, I have 8 gigs of RAM that can only be accessed fully with the 64bit version of W7. Hmmmmm..........

Well VDJ is still only 32 bit, so if you'll be mainly running VDJ I don't see much point in having a 64 bit OS.
