Hey guys. I'm at a loss. I am running Virtual DJ on a Macbook Pro and have all my music on a 1Tb WD passport, and have a backup Macbook Pro and 1Tb WD passport as well.
Every few weeks I update the backup hard-drive with the recent downloads/purchases I make by copying and pasting from my main drive to the back-up -- but I've noticed when I plug the back up harddrive in, my playlists don't load, nor do all my virtual folders. So unless I use my main computer and main hard-drive I can't use my dinner playlists or virtual folders.
I've tried to export the playlists into the backup hard-drive and they now show up, but when I go to put them into deck, it disappears. I also don't want to have to re-create all the virtual folders I've made for different parties (Halloween, Christmas, Wedding, Prom, etc). Can someone walk me through this or see what I'm doing wrong?
I'm new to virtual DJ, so if you have a step by step instruction it would be help. But I've tried copying the "playlist" folder from the Virtual DJ/Cue folder and replacing it with the one on the back up and that didn't work either.

The playlist does not contain the songs, just links to them. So they are linked to your main drive. Your backup drive has a different drive letter to it, so it can't find the songs. I'm sure one of the smatter guys can tell you how to make this work for you.

That makes sense. So would I need to change the hardrive letter then?
What about the virtual folders. Is there a reason they're not all showing up on my backup hard drive, despite it being an exact copy of the main one I use?

I assume you are not able to use the lists on the backup computer using the backup drive. Changing the drive letter for the backup drive on the backup computer to the same letter as the main drive on the main computer. This should clear up your issues as long as you are copying everything with the same filepaths.

1. Macs don't use driver letters.
2. The drive letter isn't important anymore. Even if you change it vdj will find all the songs IF the rest of the file path is the same! That is the important part.
Your playlists are saved in your users document/virtualdj/playlists folder.
I don't know the exact path on mac because I'm using Win. But that folder should be on your main drive.
You have to copy this folder too.
Same goes for the “folders“ folder on you main drive virtualdj folder. This one contains your virtual folders.
Next, on your external you will find a 2nd virtualdj folder, copy this one too to your backup drive. That folder contains all your virtual folders of the external drive.

Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with Mac's.
However, the playlists are still m3u files, correct? I know VDJ adjusts it's library, I wasn't sure about the smart folders, but I didin't think it adjusted playlists. Is this new? A few months ago I still had to adjust the drive letter to match the complete path.

I'm not sure if Vdj will change the drive letter in the m3u files. But I believe it will scan other drives for the same file path if it can't find the track at the path stored in the m3u. That happens only at that time when you try to load the file out of the playlist.
At least this is what happens in the database if the drive letter changed.

I just tested to confirm, an incorrect drive letter in a playlist (not virtual folder or filter folder) shows as a missing file.
This is on a Windows PC. I do not know how the list or path structure is on a Mac. My guess it's similar to Linux and you would have to mount the drive with the same name.

If the playlist was written by VirtualDJ, it will contain the size of the file as well.
If you then make sure the new drive is in the database before loading the playlist, virtualdj should automatically find the new location.
If the size of the file has changed or was not available in the original playlist, then it will show as missing. Right-click relocate should help you find the missing files however. (If the file name didn't change it will point to the right location automatically and all you need to do is confirm)
