Hi people - apologies in advance for all the questions I have.
Just an easy question today - is it best to use crates or playlists? If I understand it correctly playlists are to ad M3U support and crates play nicely with databases imported from Serato. Just wondering what the preferred option is?
Thanks.

crates are for serato. VDJ is folder based so no need to make a crate.example on my laptop my folders are: country, rock, spanish, hip hop, freestyle, etc, etc

Thanks for the reply - do you mean the folders relate directly to the folders on your hard drive?

Yup because its folder based.meaning when I download say some new music & copy and paste it to my country folder.well when I open up vdj the music will be in my country folder.what happens in your folders also happens in vdj.but serato users have to make crates. So in serato do adding new music to any folder on m laptop won't auto add to my say country crate in serato DJ.in serato you have to open it up go into your crate add the song & rescan that crate.

Got it but say you now had a track that could be in 2 categories for example Black Eyed Peas could be Rap, Dance or Chart, would you then add it to your second choice category in a playlist or crate

i do have doubles of songs in different folders, but it dont bother me.cause hard drive space is so big & cheap to come by.so when i type in the search bar and 3-4 songs show up i just pick one :-)

In VirtualDJ the choice is playlist and virtual folder.
Copying files as djtyme does is another option, but then they are also different database entries, meaning that they will show up in search twice, the playcount or last play date doesn't update, cue points are not synchronized etc... so it may not be the best solution for everyone.
A playlist is a list of files with an order (and it can contain the same track twice)
A virtual folder does not have a specific order (just sorted based on your browser preference) and will contain each track only once.
Whichever you prefer is up to you.

I recommend checking out Section B of the user guide. Especially starting off on page 52.
