Ffmpeg v Handbrake
It's a little like the Apple v Windows laptop thing.

WinFF, a front end for FFmpeg, only allows the changing of the preset options using the portable version. This is odd, and somebody might find I'm wrong, or a way to alter the presets in the installed version. They kept changing back to the defaults using inferior audio.
I like WinFF because I don't have to mess around compiling a queue (I finally figured out how to spell) as with Handbrake. It's just simple drag and drop file management. However there might be deeper reasons to use FFmpeg which are beyond my knowledge.

All of my karaoke discs I have ripped were standard CDG trakcs and I purchased and used Power CD+G Burner (http://www.powerkaraoke.com/src/prod_powercdgburner.php) to rip them to my hard drive. Never had to mess with VOB files on karaoke discs.
