excuse the slight ranting element to this post, but ive just watched a video on youtube of a female dj named juicy M, she is mixing on a 4 deck pioneer setup and does not wear headphones in the video.

after reading some of the comments i got pretty pissed off with how ignorant some people are towards djs and their abilities.

a lot of people commented about the lack of headphones, yet none of them seemed to notice the monitor speakers behind her or the fact that what they are hearing is actually the recorded set overlayed onto the video.

ive mixed on many occasions without headphones... actually for that matter ive mixed totally on the fly with no monitor element at all and as most djs know is very much doable.

why are so many people so ignorant and why if these people (who also say they are djs and cant mix without headphones) can do better, are they not up there touring the music scene on a pro level?

surely im not the only one who gets peeved by these thing?

Yeah, well maybe they'll learn one day...

You know the DMC championships? Performing without headphones was a big crowd pleaser in some of those early battles - and the audience was almost entirely made up of other DJs.

I don't know if any of the present day contestants do it, but I would imagine so. It's easier to do now than it was back then, when it was real (not timecode) vinyl only.

TOO many DJs care what other DJs do. If you know your music, have your cue points all set no headphones needed. I do it all the time. hell i use SYNC all the time, no fks given. I paid my dues. Ive been DJing since 1989. Most younger DJs dont know the real struggle of dust bunnies. buying 3 copies of one record. carrying milk crates of records, heavy amps, speakers.... DJing uphill in the snow both ways.... list goes on and on....

wheres my cane dagnamit!

Juicy M is cool, check out her ipad video as well! However, playing like this is only possible when the set is prepared really well. She has some videos with vinyl as well, with stickers on her records. Anyways, I love her skills, and that's not the only reason I like watching her videos ;-)

lol yeah same here, sometimes i totally loose track of the music, i actually seen a remake of one of her videos where the music was distorted and it was labelled "what i seen" ... and it focussed on her less music related attributes lol

with or without it's a skill you should practice from time to time. because sometimes things go very terribly wrong. a couple of years ago we managed to have 2 sets of cans break in one night. we spent the rest of the night without any until someone managed to get back from the local Walmart with some absolutely terrible headphones that were more suited to a kids Walkman from back in the day.

plan for the worst, hope for the best, muddle through when ya have to.

If I did not use headphones I would feel as if I'm offering a second best product. Quite often I mix songs which have long tricky intros which build up from nothing and also I've never before heard. My sets are not fixed and float all over the place. In fact I'm lost without headphones.

Headphones, eq's, bpm, key, wave displays plus their beatgrids and the sampler are fundamental to my mixing.

Yes I do and can mix without headphones but it's vastly inferior when my songs are not preprepared.

Note: Of course it's dead easy with a dj friendly bump, bump, bump, bump..intro.

I do what works for me, and don't worry about what the other DJs are doing. I too have had to mix without headphones when I left mine in the car, with my backups at the dealership, using a rental car. Lets just say I was glad for software.
