Fun is the wrong word..we are here to help the client have a great time, and maybe prosper. So it's good to use visuals as well as sound to enhance a party / event / club night. There are so many ways visuals can supplement sound..but it's a lot of extra work for the DJ.
I believe 99% of non visual DJ's will be extinct within the next decade.
Note that the really big name DJ's have professional people to provide their visuals.

None of the venues I work in have screens so it'll be interesting to see how that pans out.

It's sounds like you're working in someones garden shed ! lol. I know you're not..but your venues do sound a little backward, even if they're top quality.

Fun is childish..it won't get you through you're work. Sometimes DJing is not fun. People can make your life difficult. Satisfaction from doing a great job and making the audience happy is my goal. If I have fun that's secondary.
We don't see any pictures of your rig Groovin..yet mine demonstrating video do appear in this forum.
Talk is easy.
Notice the 3 large screen TV's by the bar..plus my own and the rear projection screen.

Why do you think Serato, and RekordboxDJ (Pioneer) are scrambling around trying to get into video, and even Traktor can be enhanced using video.

but most of the time you're doing it for you. you don't really want your customers staring at screens unless there's no room on the dancefloor and you want them to see something on the screens.
but using the effects and transitions, unlinking the crossfader from video so you have Michael Jackson singin to Sir Mix-A-Lot... yeah that can be fun every so often.
and yes that's using vdj8.2

I may be different to some of you..my hobby before becoming a DJ was chess. Now I got to be reasonably good, I was my club champion, and played for my county. I battled with a good number of International and a few Grandmasters. It was not fun..but I loved it !
Being a DJ in the year 2017 offers a multitude of technical challenges whilst interacting with the audience. It's not easy. There are a good number of "clown" DJ's who do very well, they often become rich and famous. One such DJ was Kenny Everett. I do not want to emulate such DJ's. It's a personal choice.

the 3-6 second attention span = you NEED to grab their attention and sometimes force it. if a music video isn't playing then in-house promotional stuff is. and still images just don't cut it anymore - motion graphics, screen crawls the entire time, looping logo to remind their alcohol befuddled minds where they are when they're having a good time they will barely remember.
is there more we can do? sure. we could aim a camera at them and run the feed through vdj, we could set up a photobooth with the images going directly into the computer's slideshow folders, make it as fully interactive as we can safely do it. but sometimes.... simpler is better. it depends on the crowd and the time you have to do it.

Hm..I don't often get that problem, at the moment I'm seeing a lot of brilliant karaoke singers. So.. cutting from a brilliant vocalist to a top video track is sort of cool (am I allowed to use the word cool?). When surprise is needed I have the whole world of music to review, and then I can choose a gem for that moment.
As for slideshows ..when people are looking at a visual family history it takes a little while for them to become bored.
I generally get a good audience although the last hour or two can become drunkenly difficult.

Yes I've done radio, but I also worked in clubs when I was younger and vinyl was the only format, and had a residency at a bar for a while a few years ago.
I was actually one of the contestants in the first ever DMC mixing competition!

I know you're not attacking me! I was just correcting your "radio type" statement.
Growing up, radio DJs were the first type that I heard - and that was the style back then anyway, for mobile and club DJs too. Mixing came later.
That's kind of how I got into club work. I could mix, so worked alongside a non mixing DJ.
