Hi there:

I'm using Nero's AAC codec, because from testing I've seen, it performs just slightly better than iTunes' codec at very low bitrates. I'm actually using foobar2000 (the old 0.8.3) with NeroAACWrapper.exe to encode them, but in any case, the Virtual DJ demo that I'm testing doesn't seem to work effectively with them.

I can drag and drop the song onto the virtual turntable, and the song title shows up and such, but it doesn't scan, or allow me to play the song.

I've got a small sample of one of these songs here, for testing: http://fullspec.ca/music/burning.m4a

Can anyone tell me why Virtual DJ won't play this song properly? I'm seriously considering purchasing this program, and AAC support is going to be a big factor for me to consider. Hopefully it's just something simple and easy to correct...

Thanks!

I think this is an issue with the Nero Digital codec. I tried playing the file using QuickTime and it wouldn't produce any audio. It also crashed Winamp after about two seconds of stuttered audio. It did work fine with Realplayer, Nero Showtime, iTunes and Windows Media Player however. I tried to get your example file working in VDJ but couldn't - perhaps someone with more experience could help you out.

However, do you really need to encode your files with such low bitrates using the Nero codec? Other codecs (i.e. Apple's work fine).

I've just tested the Nero Digital mp4 codec with 100% sucess rate, I suspect that foobar is doing something wrong. If you don't have Nero SoundTrax to do the encoding I suggest you download dbPowerAmp with the MP4/M4A/AAC decoder and Nero AAC Encoder. This works with VDJ and all other programs 100%.

Hmm... interesting. Although if nero files themselves appear to work, I wouldn't blame foobar. Perhaps it's the NeroAACWrapper.exe program though that's doing something funny. I wish someone could say specifically what that was.

*sigh* it looks like it's going to be a huge pain in the ass to encode anything to AAC, because I've tried several different frontends for nero, but haven't had much luck. Maybe I can work some magic with DBPoweramp.

You're probably right about foobar it most likely is the neroaacwrapper (possibly to do with mp4 containers although I couldn't say for sure). I personally tested dbpoweramp and it worked fine with the nero plugin and vdj :)

Do note that the nero dbpoweramp plugin requires a registered version of either nero5 or nero6

The below should be (not tested) dbpoweramp 10.1, this is the final version before they started limiting mp3 encoding.

AAC install #1: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codecs/dBpowerAMP-codec-mp4.exe
AAC install #2: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codecs/dBpowerAMP-codec-Nero-mp4.exe

Best of luck :)

It's been a while since my original post, so I thought I'd update.

Nero has released a Free command line version of Nero Digital Audio AAC Encoder, and I've been using it with foobar. VirtualDJ can play the files now, and it also reads the tags too.

There is a problem though... when I play the files in Virtual DJ, it must decode them as Low Complexity LC-AAC, and not High Efficiency HE-AAC. I think it might not support Spectral Band Replication either (SBR). Is there any way of upgrading the AAC decoder to support these more advanced technologies? I currently have a big part of my music collection encoded to 48 kb/s AAC files, and although they normally don't sound bad (i.e. playing them back in foobar), they sound crappy in Virtual DJ.

*sigh*
I might just have to go back to Ogg Vorbis. AAC is promising, but too not well supported...

Okay, just a quick update:

My AAC files sounded like ass when I used the default quicktime encoder, but since, I tried installing a number of different directshow filters, so that I could use the General Windows Media Player audio decoder. I think I had so many codecs installed that there were problems with them. It made sense to try CoreAAC, but that didn't help.

Currently I'm using the 3ivx codec pack, and it actually sounds great, like it should, but I believe this to be a commercial package, and I don't really feel like paying for this right now.

Here's the link to 3vix, btw:
