I have for a long time now been looking for the perfect small pro mixer
to use with VDJ, my laptop and my HDJC. But still haven't found any i like.
Sure, there are som small and "cheap" mixers out there. But they never
have the features i want. Today i use a Gemini 10" mixer and i think it's
a little to big to carry around.
BTW: You really don't need the HDJC to use it ;-)
So i finally decided to build my own VDJ dedicated mixer to get just what
i want in features etc.
Features:
- Really small (160mm * 160mm * 30mm)
- 4 assignable line inputs
- 3 band EQ with rotary kill
- Mixable Cue function
- A/B - Master selectable VU
- Mic EQ
- Buttons to controll all important features in VDJ
- Cheap to build ( $99 for material goal ).
- Etc.
** Image in my blogg. **
But it would be really nice to hear any comments on this, features
missing, is it a stupid idea to do this etc.

just 2 ideas to help you
1. create a headphone prelistening crossfader
2. use faders for the volume

Headphone prelistning crossfader is already implemented. A - Cue - B , is that function.
Pot in center = master , Full Left = Ch A . Full right = Ch B.
Cue Volume is located on the front.
Faders for volume, i use rotary pots due to limited space. But that could be replaced.

Uh!
If it's that cheap, could be interesting.

Wow, that looks really cool, i never even thought of building a customised mixer!
I was just on the denon website and noticed this
http://www.denondj.com/prodview_item.asp?pid=7&cid=3
according to the info, it's the smallest mixer on the market! But just thort i'd post it to give you some inspiration (or incase you change your mind about building one.) :-)
EDIT: Just realised you said you wanted buttons to control VDJ on it, it doesn't do that unfortunately!
But i just read a review of it that said it was very good!

My next mixer project is without the VDJ buttons and even smaller ;-) It's the pern-m2 project
This mixer is just 100mm * 160mm * 30mm and it still have most of the features of the pern-m1 project. CUE Vol is on front.

I have now added some more schematics in my Blog.
I will not just post the schematics etc but also detailed instructions on how to make your own and help people if i can that wan't to have there own.
I also put the schematics up here to get input from other regarding mixer-functionality (missing etc) and also input regarding the schematics from other people interested in electronics.
And after these 2 mixers i got some other VDJ-related Electronic projects in cue.
Got comments etc ? Just let me know ..

I have received some question if it's possible to do this mixer/controller as a 19" one also.
Yes it is, the schematic and PCB are made as generic as possible. I will do a 19" front panel design and put in my blog asap.

16 assignable MIDI control knobs
10 assignable MIDI buttons
assignable 60mm crossfader for mixing and scratching
snapshot mode sends all controller values simultaneously
controller mute function allows positioning before tweaking
global channel assign allows controllers to command up to 16 different channels at the touch of a button

sys-ex memory dump
sys-ex librarian software loads, saves any combination of setups for your studio (PC only)
LCD screen displays controller assignments
USB bus-powered
USB Class compliant—requires no drivers under Windows XP or Mac OS X
power: USB or 9V DC, 250-300mA center-positive power adaptor (not included)
size/weight: 13-7/8” x 6-5/8” x 3-1/2”; 2.43 lbs.

@mp3jrick:
Yes i have. But this is not the same. This is a 100% analog mixer that i can use with anything. And i really do prefer an good external EQs with rotary kill , CUE mix etc when i use VDJ.
Then there are functionality added to controll VDJ.

@pdnmusic:
That's in "And after these 2 mixers i got some other VDJ-related Electronic projects in cue" ;-)
Pitch and Jog Wheel is actually someting i have been looking at a lot. And i have 2 different prototypes of that working already. It's easy for me to do a microcontroller/MIDI based solution for myself (Like DAC-3). But i'm working on finding a really simple and cheap way to fix it so that anyone can add it. When that is solved, then you can add it to the mixer or as a stand-alone controller without the mixer.
BTW: The pern-1 mixer front is at the bottom of the blog and at that there are no free space under GAIN.

My assignments are as follows:
Across the top row of rotaries hi mid low eq, gain left and gain right and the reverse for the right deck eq.
Across the bottom rotaries volume L, main, R, 3 spare, and Hp mix and then Hp volume.
On the panel buttons I have 1-4 video transitions, bottom most buttons are video fx, momentary beat match, and on each side of that gradual pitch resets.
And there's plenty of other things to assign, it was your desire to have direct control over the program that made me post this.
Good luck with your project.
Rick

I'm sure that X-Session is really good to work with.
I looked a lot at doing something like that first. There is a lot of simple MIDI hardware that you can use for it like midiBox etc (http://www.ucapps.de/) if you don't want to do the controller stuff yourself.
And maybee i will do something like it in the future also.
But on the moment i want a "real" mixer and to be able to controll VDJ. That's the perfect "mix" for me ;-)
