hey guys,
i got my first gig! yay! :)
its just a christmas party at my martial arts centre, and i have been asked to mix for the kids and adults parties, couple of hours each. gotta start somewhere! it will most probably go off-to-the-max-brudda at the adults party, but for the kids party, i am stumped....
WHAT THE HELL DO I PLAY FOR THEM???
they are aged anywhere from 5 to 13. They probably wont like some hard trance or hardstyle (even though i would if i were them!), so what styles should i mix? and could anyone please list some songs that may be good for them?
please help me!!!!

Are you an Aussie? Your blog said Queensland. Don't know what the kids down there like, but I'll bet it is pop. The kids here in the US like pop and rap/hiphop. I only play clean versions. Pop here is Britney, Christina, Fergie, Gwen, Mariah, Pussycat Dolls, Beyonce. Some hiphop/rap here for kids, Kelis, Yung Joc, Diddy, Mary J Blige, Sean Paul, Cassie. Like I said, I have no clue what they are doing down under. You can also look at the top 100 from your pop stations there, or Billboard. Good Luck.
On another note, keep up your training. I studied for many years. It has kept me moving in my old age. It is also why some things hurt, but you take the good with the bad.

Kids really like karaoke. They have no fear and once they start they don't stop. It also chews up time.

Also, get yourself the KIDZ Bop albums... they're versiona of popular pop songs by the original artists with kids singing along, and they clean the songs up for kids....
good stuff...
Allofmp3.com has them all...
indespensible!
also, get the hannah montana soundtrack, as well as the cheetah girls 1 &2 albums.
and also, even though she's a trailer park HO, britney spears always works... I don't know how, but little girls know every word to every song.
smashmouth, gavin degraw, maroon 5, there's lots of kid friendly stuff out there... if you know someone who has XM radio, listen to radio disney for an hour, and you'll get the idea of what kids will get into... they've got it to a science...
And the karaoke? I second that... you get them going, and 3 hours will fly by....

for them at those ages it's all about what's cool.play the newest stuff clean versions only of course, the local stations may list there most currently popular songs right on there home page use what's on those lists. you only need 15 or 16 good songs for one hour.play all the line dances loop up some of the line dances a bit. also you 'll be amazed at some of the stuff the parents and the kids both like.do you know those NOW discs? there's a bunch of 'em ....get the 2 most recent.

lol yeah im an Aussie, from New South Wales.
im not sure what kind of party this is gonna be, whether it will be a dancing kinda party or a stuff-your-face-and-run-around-like-a-maniac (i love writing like that lol) party, and if it is the latter i thought maybe i should put on a pre mixed cd, but that is not the DJ way :)
as for kareoke, i dont have the gear to do that, not even a mircophone. im just plugging my computer into the guys surround-sound system. its kinda a dodgy setup, so unfortunatly I think that is a bit out of the question.
so i should check out the charts and and look into buying some new compilation CDs?
thanks for your help so far guys! :) you rock
please keep the posts coming!

make lists.....lotsa lists/folders......good starters, good slow dance, school faves, good turnaround, good cocktail......write comments, lotsa comments i try to have a note to myself on every song.....you can actually make some club tunes work even with kids, i take club versions by say mariah or rihanna and if there too fast I lock the key and experiment with slowing them down to like 108 or 120 bpm....with lotsa confidence ( which comes from lotsa practice) and lotsa friendly you can succeed in all kinds of ways .

@DJ Turbo
I've played for kids a few times as a service to friends that have kids, the kids of my boss having a party etc... ;) Quite fun actually..
You'd be surpriced how updated and hip they are.... ;) They like almost the same music as 18years olds ;) At least here.... With MTV and other music channels giving them all the inputs..
In Norway we have a CD series called "Hits For Kids" that sell LOTS, and many or even most tracks are really made for grown ups ;)
