I just picked up a new HP Pavilion Laptop with a GeForce 8600m GS with 512mb dedicated memory card and I’m unable to extent the desktop using the S-Video out to a TV. I called HP and even when back to the store and all they could tell me is that Microsoft doesn’t support that type of connection to a TV. I have n o problems with my other HP Laptop but this one maybe going back if I can’t resolve the problem.

I have an 8600GT in one of my computers and had the same problem when I first used it, it won't always recognize the external monitor out....some things that help (1) make sure in the nvidia control panel you select multiple displays (computer monitor name & tv display), (2) you select "dual mode" NOT clone or horizontal extend (3) ALWAYS make sure you have the external output s-video cable connected to a recognizable source (i.e the external display tv/projector) BEFORE turning on the computer. I use a 4 source selector box with built in rf "tv" signal converter that I plug the s-video from the computer into. They are available from radio shck for about $10-$20. The video card will recognize this selector box as a "source" and activate the dual monitor mode. I then run the video output from the selector to the Tvs/projectors. If you carry the selector around with you you never have to worry about what kind of video display system the bar has.

thanks I'll pick one up

Not certain about this particular card ... but I can tell you that you should always have your output connected and turned on so your computer will recognize it on start up.
This is true for any output ... projector, Flat Panel, distribution amp or even a wireless A/V setup.
I am surprised that simply attaching a "switch box" triggers any computer to establish an output routing ... there's no signal involved in a simple switch box to trigger the video card to send an external output signal.

The switchbox is powered and does have a signal for the rf conversion output (some of the multi source output ones also have built in low power video amps)...I don't think a straight a/b switch would work as you are correct there is no signal in those.
