After buying several laptops over the past years the first thing I did was to follow the advice of Black Viper and others, so that hungry Vista wouldn't be so heavy on resources, however i have found this can cause many problems. Recently i was submitting crash reports which were recognised as external to VDJ so i reinstalled Vista with all updates and also Virus/ spyware software and also a prog called PC Doctor and then VDJ. I didn't make any of the recommended adjustments to the Laptop, I didn't switch any software off whilst gigging and the last 8 gigs have been trouble free. As often said " If its not broke don't fix it "

There is true in that statement. Often people in those tips advice to disable a lot of services, some of them might needed by user like network, sharing etc.
On VISTA you can disable for sure:
Sidebar
UAC (User Account Control in Control Panel>User Accounts)
Aero
Windows Defender, Firewall and System Protection
Fix Swap file to same size, like 2 or 3GB
Disable Disk Defragment Scheduler
Hope this helps

Your correct about this. I have three vista computers and have deactivated very little in two of my computers. None in the third.
A matter of fact I installed more to help perfect how I like VDJ to run ( not because it was needed ).

Don't disable UAC.... why does everyone on this forum think this is a good idea? Especially on a dedicated gig machine, when are you ever going to get a UAC prompt? Does Virtual DJ write anything to Program Files other than the initial installation, nope.

Andrew you may think it's a good feature, and it may be,
but there are some people, including myself, that think it's one of the most annoying things ever.

If it's on a dedicated gig machine and you're only using Virtual DJ and your web browser, UAC is never going to interfere. I remember reading last week that a DJ was asked to play a track from a USB pendrive and it contained a virus. Had UAC been available, in theory, the virus should not have been able to cause such widespread damage that a format of the laptop would be required as it would not have access to change any system settings.
I suppose a lot of how annoying UAC is comes down to how badly some older software has been designed (compatibility), or how often the user wishes to add and remove software. A trick is to install such applications into C:\Users\Public\Documents. I don't find UAC too obtrusive and only encounter it when I run CCleaner or O&O Defrag, it takes less than a second to press ALT + C to confirm I want to give the program administrator rights.
I guess a lot of my issue is that I'm generally the person who is asked to fix friends/family computer problems caused by the user themselves by disabling their security but of course everyone is welcome to their own preference.

UAC will not save you from viruses and trojans, believe me, they first write code to get around it ;)

User Access Controls. It is a program that asks "Are you sure you want to allow this" in Vista. Turning it off makes a difference on how the machine performs.
