Im in the same situation as yourself, I am in the market for a new laptop and cannot decide between a mac or a pc, I just got a quote from dell for their Studio XPS 16, it has better specs than the macbook pro for almost $500 cheaper. I used my partners XPS at a gig this past weekend and it worked great, mixed videos for 3hrs straight with no problems.... Here are the specs for the Studio XPS 16:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53GHZ Processor
4GB DDR3 (RAM)
500GB @5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive
ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3670 - 512MB (Video Card--- **Dedicated)
16\\\\\\\" 720p Widescreen LCD
ExpressCard Sound Blaster X-Fi Laptop Sound Card
If You want a copy of the quote sheet just PM me and I can foward it to you no problem... The final price after taxes was $1752.65. I think this is the laptop for me, I am comfortable with a Dell and was not looking foward to making the switch to Mac. Hope that helps!

Ryan I would be very surprised if you can't beat that Dell price .....
also that unit has 64 bit OS ....
next is my general advice followed by video advice
general advice .... buy at a store , order a custom unit , or make your own custom unit ,
that has 3 gigs of ram , an external drive for music ,and another external drive for video .... all drives including the C: will be better if they are 7200 rpm , if the external drives are not preformatted for NTFS then format them yourself b4 using .....
buy at a store , order a custom unit , or make your own custom unit that has a video card that has 256 mb of ram or more
NONE of the other crap matters .....you don't want a unit that is "fully loaded" ....you are not buying a luxury car , you are buying or building a platform ,that will smoothly render audio and video .....

Thanks Ryan.I don t know why,but I don t trust dell very much.My favorite is
http://www.laptopsdirect.ie/Sony_VAIO_FW21Z_VGNFW21Z.CEK/version.asp
of maybe
http://www.laptopsdirect.ie/Acer_Aspire_6935G_Laptop_LX.ATQ0U.037/version.asp
But I am not buing it untill I find a shop where they let me bring it back ,if it won t work well.
chucknorrisyouwimps thank you for your advices. Why you dont want to post any models? Some people here have very good laptops ,and problems with VDJ for reasons they don t know.If I asked you, which controller you use,and if you like it,i think you would tell me.Why you dont want to answer when it comes to PC?I don t have couple laptops to try,how else can I make a research, than ask those who have some? But thak you anyway and sorry for my english. :)

sky, both the laptops you picked are fairly similiar to the dell except you picked laptops with DDR2 memory, DDR3 is more up to date and is faster than DDR2, however, both the systems you picked as well as the one I got quoted on are 64 bit systems, from what I'm hearing 64 bit systems are more advanced than the dj softwares that are out. I don't want to downgrade because I have a feeling that in a few months everything is going to be 64 bit and we are going to be kicking ourselves realizing we should of stuck with the 64 bit instead of downgrading....I don't want to have to buy a new laptop every year

My 2 cents.
If you are leaning toward a MAC and plan to do video, look closly at the VIDEO output = it is not very versatile (e.g., if you play at a club that uses S-Video, your image will be low quality).
Also, the Mac's provide few USB ports and if you plan to use External Hard Drives, Contollers, full size mouse, etc then this may be an issue for you. Sure you could add a USB hub, but you will sacrafice some speed.

When you say "nothing else matters" does this mean even the CPU? Are you saying an AMD Sempron or an Intel Celeron at 2ghz will work just as nicely as a core 2 duo at 2ghz if the drives and video cards are as you spec'd? Also where do you find a 7200rpm internal laptop drive? All the internal laptop drives I have seen are 5400rpm?

@3sky ......i really believe we should all do a little research on these things ourselves , and it's not to be mean
lemme give an example if i say " get this great model xyz from fred corp." then I'm claiming I know what is the best solution for you !!??
also in chess there is an old saying that when you find a good move , that's nice but keep looking .......don't stop at the first good possibility
i definitely think that applies here...... your english is fine ... sure beats my french and spanish .....i actually do read some of the posts in french and i think i can still follow it good enough to get about 80% of it ......
@dj electric
of course I don't mean the cpu ..... what i do mean is don't get distracted by the stuff that doesn't apply to you doing your thing live , for pay , in front of an audience
for instance .... if it has lightscribe are you going to use that at a gig ?? lotsa doofy crap on the fully loaded units .....
we all need at least 3 computers ..... the main gig rig , the back up
and the home system ......the home system can have all kindsa doofy crap on it and lesser specs , but the others can't .....
i don't have 7200 rpm on the C: myself and don't know of any so far , but it's still a good recommendation .....especially since we don't have to be locked into store bought laptops??!
it never hurts to look for the best possible solution .......especially since sometimes you find it or maybe make it yourself......

is it a good unit because the people selling it say it is ??
or is it good because we can run VDJ on it ??
Chuck shoots, he scores .....
