VGN-NS11M core2 duo 2.0ghz 3gb of ram, windows xp sp3 ,audio4 dj,Hercules rmx steel, external 500gb wdmybook...the laptop is vdj dedicated, with all the known tweaks on the system..usb ports loosing power after about 3-4 hours of djing.Steel got flashin lights and no response.and the ext hd dissapears..the laptop is two months old downgraded to xp(original with vista go home premium)..I DO NOT trust usb hubs powered or not. This thing happens 4 nights continiously during my gig..so i turn to my amilo li1818 plus bcd300 backup which is old and perfect..VAIO is just one step before my window(4th floor)..

For XP...
Under start / control panel / system / hardware / device manager...
Click on the + next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
Right click on any USB Root Hub, click Properties
Power management tab
uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
OK.
Repeat for other USB Hubs
Did that work?

Could it possibly be an overheating fault with the Sony? If the same external hardware is being used ok on another laptop I would then try to install some monitoring programs on the sony to see exactly what is happening when the problem occurs.
There is a USB sniffer program at http://sourceforge.net/projects/usbsnoop/ not sure if thats what you need though.
Does your software include tools to check the heat levels of the laptop. I havent had to research anything like that. Just putting out some ideas. Good luck.
