Radio Shack?... Huh?
Chukster..... please, There is only one reason to buy anything from Radio Shack: It's open on Sunday and you need it that day.

Teary, you need to show me how to do the THIS hyperlink thing.

I noticed the "D" and didn't know what the "D" was for.... and If I didn't know WHAT the "D" was for you can bet the 22 year old Radio Shack manager sure doesn't know he should stock this one.
The websites both TEARY and I provided you will have any video adapter you need. You should be able to find what you are looking for without a problem.

I've been unable to find a DVI-D to VGA adapter anywhere (only looked for about 30 minutes though)
but I did find these... http://www.cablewholesale.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?text=dvi-d+vga
will probably need some gender changers.
hope this helps.

Sorry Chuckers I went through the same thing when I built my Gig machine.
Unfortunately you cannot change a DVI-D signal to a VGA signal; The reason being DVI-D means DVI-D(igital) it will only send out a digital signal. Whereas a DVI-A(naloge) CAN be Changed with a DVI-VGA gender changer.
I found this out with my gig machine - it has DVI and VGA outputs. I ended up having to buy a DVI-D monitor to use as my primary display and using the VGA/TV outputs to go to my projector/or LCD tv's
It's a Pain in the Butt. Gotta read them specs on the vid cards when buying them.

Actually Radio SLack isn't such a bad place to buy cables and adapters provided they actually carry what you are looking for. I was a club DJ by night and during the day I was a manager at Radio SLack. This was about 11 years ago (time flies!). No one including the DM knew about the product we were selling quite like myself which was why I ended up leaving for greener pastures, plus my education beckoned me elsewhere. I'm not defending the company in any way but when it comes to adapters and the like RS carries a good product. I was about 31 when I left the company for much bigger better things, definitely not the typical 22 year old noob!
I have a few LCD monitors & projectors that I use for karaoke, music videos and visualizations. My lappy has and HDMI port that goes into an HDMI splitter box (bought from RS Online). A couple of my bigger LCD's are also a TV so it has all of the choices including HDMI, so no problem there, but I also have a 22" computer monitor that only offers VGA and DVI. I bought an HDMI to DVI adapter from my good old local Wal-Mart. This adapter is made by Phillips and it works excellent. With my HDMI splitter I can output to 4 monitors or projectors. For the most part cables and adapters are pretty much the same regardless of brand. You can take this advice from a techie who has been in the electronics game for nearly 30 years. I have a $45,000 home theater system, amateur radio equipment & scanners, hi end Meade Telescope equipment and a computer network from hell at home and my business. My personal vehicles (Escalade EXT & Mercedes E500) have multi thousand $ A/V systems over 5000 watts, a 22" Bass Boat with a 275 HP Merc and 3 GPS units and sonar plus a rockin' sound system. The reason I am telling you all of this is because I'm trying give you an idea of my expertise with electronics and the cabling, etc associated with it. As long as you use the properly rated cable/adapter for whatever your application, it very rarely matters which brand it is or where you bought it. My electronics enthusiasm isn't cheap so if I didn’t' believe in what I was saying I wouldn't say it.
No offense to anyone, the general consensus seems to be the same regarding this issue so I thought I might educate someone!!

Does your graphics card not have DVI-I connectors, e.g. (top two connections)

If so, you can use a simple adaptor as these ports carry both the digitial and analog signals simultaneously. If not, you may have to purchase a device like the HDFury and use a DVI-D to HDMI adaptor (it would be cheaper to buy a new graphics card). The HDFury is quite a nice little unit and supports FullHD (1920x1080 60Hz), you'll notice it's much smaller than most units which do the same thing:

Looks like Andrew is on the case.... he's my VIDEO HERO! (He knows his stuff and then some)
DJ RuDeDoGG: I wasn't really trying to imply ALL the people who work at Radio Shack were fired from their job at McDonald's and Radio Shack was the only company that would hire them. For the most part I was just bustin on old Chucky because that's what we do around here if the other one knows we are "just kiddin". It was not my intention to insult any of the Radio Shack alumni here in the forum. I'm never RuDe, normally I'm so sweet I melt in your mouth.
As far as Radio Shack and the quality of their products I agree their products are probably just as good as most others, that being said I can usually find the same thing at a far better price elsewhere if time allows. Actually my brother worked for Radio Shack one summer and he didn't know the difference a VGA splitter and a PGA Golfer. (He probably thought the VGA splitter was a cheerleader)

Lol! I hear ya DJ Renee, I knew you didn't mean any harm! RS IS quite expensive though for these items but I usually don't wanna or can't wait to order online or drive to the nearest metropolitan electronics outlet. Lately some of my more recent applications have been somewhat obscure so I've had little other choice but to order online or drive to Fry's.
If your computer DVI output is DVI-D Single then a DVI- D Dual will still plug into it and work. A DVI-D Single male will plug into a DVI-D Dual female plug and then you can use the DVI to HDMI adapter. I have such a configuration right here with a bunch loose extra DVI cables of both kinds and the HDMI adapter and it should work.

Chuck's trying to go from DVI to VGA, there's only two possible ways to do this:
1) If the output(s) on the graphics card are DVI-I (likely) or DVI-A (unlikely)
2) If the output(s) on the graphics card is DVI-D an external converter such as the HD Fury must be used
*A dual cable cannot fit into a single socket, look at the diagram I posted above, there are no holes for the additional pins.* - I'm not sure on this actually but it doesn't matter for this problem.
You're right that a single male can plug into a dual socket but no HDMI adaptor is needed, the aim is to make an analogue connection. Dual and single link is related to picture quality rather than analogue ability.
If your graphics card can output an analogue signal (and it probably can), it will have the four square pins to the side of the connection (on the left in the diagram).

Renee' is always right
Andrew and everybody especially Marcel , thanks .....
Marcel was firstest with the mostest to quote whoever the civil war general was .....can't go digital to analog
at any rate i WAS using the vga on the laptop to send a signal to the external monitor ......BUTT
SINCE the gigrig AND the backup BOTH died 3 days apart last week ..... i find myself trying to use my crappy backup to the backup
this is an old desktop with XP home that had a 256 ram plus the 512 i had added previously ....i changed that by making it into a 1gig ram plus the 512 ..... works ok , but no extra video monitor .....had to do a kids birthday party saturday with no video ......
anyway trying to make it so i can use the little 15 in flat panel monitor and the larger external and get back to doing video .....
apparently i am going to have to get a usb vid card w/ vga connector ( as an easy to use add on ) otherwise i have to get a vid card with 2 outs which i don't currently have
then i can use the desktop system with the little monitor for my desktop and use the usb vid card to send the video to the other larger monitor
i am hoping i can set that up and just extend the desktop like usual and have 2 different views on the 2 monitors ......and do video again

I don't think you can get an external graphics card, the nearest thing would be a tv capture card but that does the opposite. With the adaptor I posted above you can indeed go from digital to analogue but I don't think it would help.
Your only option to have two different views on the two monitors is to have proper dual outputs (no splitting/cloning). Do you know if this old desktop system has an AGP or PCI-E adaptor?

to answer Andrew , dvi d dual i thnk , but it won't work
the desktop system just has vga out.... i can connect the LG monitor to that , and that still leaves the dvi d connector to daisy chain with to the smaller monitor , but it won't work ..... it won't extend the desktop and it can't send a digital out to a analog vga .......
so .....i can connect the little monitor to the original vga connector on the desktop pc and use that to view the software and get a usb video card with a vga connector extend the desktop and use the larger newer LG to view video on again
then get a new system when i get a chance and this set up becomes the new backup ........
what a week .... the luck o' the chuck ......
i hadda nice chat with the tech support babe at cablestogo and she says i can use a usb video card for the second monitor and have 2 different views on the 2 monitors .....

Ah ok, this must be the sort of thing you're after: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815101003
I wonder how well that will work to display video, it may skip frames. Isn't the DVI socket on your LG for inputs only? I've never seen multilink before (just looked at this video on their website) but it appears to only work via USB to USB from monitor to monitor - or pc usb to monitor, would that work? This page seems to indicate these monitors have a built in graphics processing unit so you could connect it straight to a usb port.
That is pretty awful luck, hope the usb display is sufficient until the new system is sorted out!

Yup, you're right! I did get a little off track there, and I knew he was trying to go DVI-D to VGA so I'm not sure where I went wrong?! I guess I got DVI happy with all of these 100's of cables I have here and forgot all about the VGA end of it. Lol!
Anyway, I had a similar problem a while back. I have an older JVC 6+1 CD+G karaoke disc changer (from my 90's KJ heyday) that only has analog composite (yellow RCA) output or "F" connecter (cable jack) output and I wanted to use a computer monitor that has DVI and VGA inputs, like your situation this was an analog to digital conversion and there really isn't anything on the market for that type of conversion. I then decided to buy the Pioneer MEP-7000 Multimedia player which can also play the CD+G discs, but much to my dismay the S.O.B. only has a composite output like my 15 year old JVC player! $2200.00 and I still got outdated technology. I ended up using one of my LCD monitors that is also a TV and it all works now. Normally I use VDJ to play my karaoke but sometimes I still like to use my discs. There are new karaoke machines that have DVI, HDMI & VGA as well as component and composite for less than $200 but my Pioneer uses only old assed composite? Anyway, now I'm off topic!! Lol.
