I get 3 to 4 years from mine, but I install a new HDD every 18 months to prevent failure. With the laptops getting moved about a lot and bass from the sound systems I just think it's a good idea. Laptop HDD's are so cheap now anyway.

Just using my DJ laptop for DJing and not the internet I usually keep it for 3 years before I upgrade however I upgrade the hard drive and memory once in this time to the limit.
I don't even do windows updates as I've found out on two separate machines that they haven't restarted afterwards, just had it with my internet laptop so I've even turned windows updates off on internet machine two.

Now do you change the HD with just the music/video files or the HD inside the laptop (with the OS)? If so how would you go about tranfering all the files over including the OS? Is it posible to clone a HD?

I keep my music on a seperate partition, therefore you can create an image of either the OS partition or the music or both.
I tend to do a fresh reinstall of XP when the drive is changed out just to freshen things up.

its better to keep one partition per harddrive, and invest in extra eternal drives to use as backup.
partitionig a drive will result in loss of performance and increase wear on the heads.

Rasza, I change the internal hard drive in the laptop to a larger one.
