Hello all. It's been a while since I've visited this site. I live in Delaware, US. I am thinking of renting out my speakers, which consist of 2 active tops and a powered sub. Has anyone dabbled in renting out their equipment? I am looking for advice on how much to charge, what to look out for, etc. I would also love to hear from those who actually have rented equipment for gigs, too. Thanks.

If you're not looking into doing it very regulary, i would say: don't do it. A rental company is 100% different from a production company. We do both (check my blog), but I rather do production. Why?
- If something is broken, it's always your problem. Even if you didn't break it: the person that rented it might not even say he broke it. Really a huge issue if you have the stuff booked for next week too. On top of that: you have to get the repair fee from the guy that broke it, and that can really be a pain in the ass.
- This brings up the next issue: investments. A rental company should have a lot in stock, you lose alot of customers if you have to send them elsewhere all the time.
- Hours spent. It seems a no-brainer: rent it out, recieve it back. Don't forget you have to make your equipment more or less foolproof to start. There's alot of administration you have to keep to date.
- Competition: there are already so many rental companies around, don't go there unless you're looking to expand and specialise.
Needless to say I would advice to wait a bit before you start renting stuff out. :)

I agree with Van on this one. People just do not take as much care of other people's equipment. You might know them, you might trust them but, I guarantee when your not around they are not being as careful as they would be if you were around. And not being as conscientious. One of the DJs who works for me has been using my gear on a regular basis. He is a good guy, worked for me for five years no problems. Now, things are getting nicked up, cords are failing and he doesn't know why. I know why, neglect.

You have a pair of speakers and a bass bin! How much do you think your going to make from hiring that? Not a lot seen as that items are relatively cheap to buy anyway.
Is it because of the recession that you have to think about renting your gear?

Im gonna do the same to make so extra money. I tell customers that i drop it off and i pick it up when the party is over. I charge 300 bucks for 2 speakers and 2 subs. They cant tell me that it didnt work because i am there to see it for myself.

hey man, cool to see another delaware DJ! ive only done it twice, one was 150$ for 2 full range powered speakers, mixer, ipod cable and a fog machine. draw up a contract for what happens in chance of breaking, etc.
i suggest 200-300 to start for a full sound system

Thanks for all the replies and opinions. The speakers that I am thinking of renting out are speakers that I actually want to sell. I want to invest in another set of speakers. I figured I could probably get more value out of these via renting. I would definitely use a contract and I would definitely drop them off, set them up and pick them up myself. I realized that there are risks involved, but since i want to sell them, anyway, it wouldn't be a big deal.
Has anyone on here ever heard of/dealt with Zilok.com? They seem the facilitate people who want to rent different items with those who have items for rent. I am looking into them as well as other sites that do the same thing.
