Hi all,
what are your ideal gain settings? I usually set mine at Always 0db, but i've heard others Always match.
I use Virtual DJ 4 and notice that the gain level dialog box gives a sum for each player once tracks are loaded, so i always adjust as it displays.
But is this the correct gain level?
My ears tell me its correct, but wanted to know what yall do concerning the gain settings?
Thanks for any info...

My autoset gain works, but I wouldn't say well. I've run into some songs where I don't have enough headroom to keep the song kicking.
Also it is a bit annoying when you play a song for the first time and the gain varies till VDJ figures it out. It usually happens during my cue session so it's a minor issue. Play the song live in an immediate fashion your limiters will kick on and the crowd will yelp.
Perhaps code the app to mute sound till VDJ figures out the gain properly. Then release mute. It shouldn't cost too much CPU time to add this feature.
It seems back in 5.xx I had better control. I remember seeing in this forum an alternate way to mod the gain control. First I'll try weeding out the low gain jams as the problem is reproduced.
I just wish the gain control stayed at center detent... so no matter where VDJ figures itself out I still have some emergency boost. 30db would be nice.

Jim L

You should avoid playing a song that hasn't been previously analysed before it has completed loading, otherwise you will get this behaviour. This is because VirtualDJ does not know the correct gain to apply until the entire song has been loaded and scanned, so it will adjust it on the fly as the song loads.
A good way to avoid this is to create a filter folder for isscanned=0 to list all of your unscanned songs. You can then easily scan them all in one go (I.e: At home while you are doing something else.)
The gain in v6 allows less adjustment above 0dB to help avoid distortion caused by applying too much software gain. If you are plugged into a hardware DJ mixer, you should use the hardware gain knob on the mixer to compensate if the output level automatically set by VirtualDJ is too low. Also, check the volume settings of your sound card - This is often set low by default.
Changing the mapping of the gain knob to power_gain will give the old gain behaviour of earlier versions.
