Tópico: I had my 1st crash EVER - Page: 1

Last night at a live show at the club, i'm happily dj'ing away and....BAM Computer shuts down. I'm like OH S**T!!!!!!!! The laptop restarts and says something like "there was a major crash"

I'm in the middle of a show so I just reloaded vdj and kept it moving. VDJ did not crash, MY LAPTOP DID!

I NEVER had this happen to me before. Is there a way to go back and check to see what happened?

The crash was on a Gateway XP home edition laptop. I had my Maya44 USB hooked up as usual using tccd with my cdj's. In fact...everything was as usual.

I have been noticing the wave display stuttering from time to time lately when I load a track.

Any ideas folks?

Without more info than you have provided, my first thought would be heat. Most DJ booths I've worked in get pretty warm. How much ventilation did you have around the laptop?
 
I have my laptop out in the open and it was a little chilly in the club last night.

laptops have vents in the bottom.. One good thing about my macbook is.. It has a big Vent in the back.
 
OK, next question. When is the last time you ran a Disk Clean Up, and defrag?
 
Defragged last week. Disc clean up....hmmmmmm. Guess I may want to do that huh. I'll run that right now.

Is there a way to go back and see the crash? I'm real curious as to what happened last night.

UPDATE...
I'm running disc cleanup now. It's complete.

I'm now doing Error-check ....Automatically fix file system errors OR
Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors OR
Both

Right click on My Computer, go to Manage and then expand Windows Logs.
Click on System and check back through the events to the time of the crash. The events should give you an idea of what happened. Usually there will be a big red/white cross next to the error event or at least a yellow triangle with a warning event.

It's a good idea to check your system and application logs every now and again to get an overall feel of how your system is running. If there are lots of error/warning events, these need to be looked at ASAP!!

No worries, I work in IT so checking logs is second nature to me, however I realise that not everyone is computer savvy :)

There are 101 of these errors all within one minute with the 1st one at 8:20:30 PM and the last one at 8:20:40 PM.

I have an error followed by two normal events then the error followed by two normal events. This goes all the way through the whole error time period.

For example...
I have a red bubble with a X in it that says....

Type................Date................Time................Source............................Category..........Event..........User...........Computer

There can be different reasons for a particular event ID depending on XP or Vista so if you can let us know what operating system your running would be helpful.
 
I am using a gateway XP Home edition laptop. I stated that in the 1st post.

I appreciate any help so I don't have another crash.
 
Okay from google search it looks like you may have Malware. Download a Malware scanner www.malwarebytes.org has a free scanner that is pretty good. Try running it and see if it locates any Malware installed on your PC.

However there can always be more than one reason for an error, try the Malware scanner first and let us know if it finds anything.

Might want to run Stinger, just in case. It is a stand alone anti-virus. You run it once, it is not a replacement for other anti-virus programs (like AVG) Here is the URL, City http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
 
 
No virus...Laptop just about never goes online.

No removed programs...Not a lot on this laptop other than VDJ

Most important...No more crashes or stuttering.

I think the scandisk and fix-errors helped a lot

Thanks T for your advice and thanks to all that helped. I'm loading XP on my other laptop soon since Vista and I keep having a disagreement on how VDJ should sound and perform.
 
You may also want to try to run 'chkdsk' from a command prompt. It's a little more in-depth than scandsk.

Click START, then RUN, type in CMD and press ENTER. Then from the prompt type in: chkdsk so that it looks like this: C:\>chkdsk then press ENTER. A chkdsk will run and if errors are found on the disk, it will tell you to run chkdsk /F - If this is the case, ignore it's advice and run chkdsk /R as this will do the same thing as the /F but will also recover and repair data from any bad sectors.
 
I think that we should ask ourself this two questions:

Is my laptop a reliable piece of hardware to do live shows?

Is my operative system reliable to do live shows?

What I mean is that the reliability needed to perform everyday tasks (e.g. word processing) is not the same that is needed for a live show.

One of the reasons that makes professional soft/hard-ware more expensive is the offered reliability.

What are you talking about? I have been using this same laptop for 5 years with VDJ. It's reliable. as I said in the title of this thread 1st CRASH EVER To me, thats pretty reliable. especially since I play out between 4 to 6 nights a week every week.
