I loaded Serato on my backup laptop. I have VDJ 3.4 on my main laptop that I play out with. All my music is on my external HD.
I used my external HD. I made my overviews in serato thinking that it CAN'T mess up my VDJ database on my giging laptop because the VDJ database is stored on the actual computer in 3.4.
I WAS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!
I went to my gig tonight, loaded up VDJ and BAM....Over half my info was gone! I'm like WTF?!? How can this have happened. I am using two different laptops. My main gig laptop has never seen serato.
I have another show tomorrow night and REALLY want my database back so I can rock it the way I am supposed to.
PLEASEEEEEEE HEEEEELP!!!!!!!!
Rick, Chris....If either of you are out there...HIT ME UP AND GET ME GOING AGAIN!!!!!!!!!! PPLLEEAASSEEEEEE

Check on your "C" drive, VDJ makes a database on every drive. Copy then paste it into your external.
Good luck!

Thanks Rude but i'm talking about v3.4.
v3.4 does not do that. In v3.4, the database is stored on the computer. That's why I don't understand why or how it's wrong now.

The only thing I can see is that you use an external hd, this means that your systems aren't totally separate as they use the same songs etc. You have a link between each machine, I had this nightmare once and since then I now have a 500gb hd in my lappy and simply back it up every other week.
Serato should just add two files within your my music folder on your ext hd or internal hd, that's all it did on my internal hd.
Sorry can't help, had similar prob once but as said I rectified by using an internal hd. Maybe this is something you could do as hd are cheap now, I've seen a 750gb internal for £135

I don't know what to do. I really need VDJ to see and read the whole database.
I'm slowing down and thinking...
The database could not have changed on my gig laptop.
I now have a serato backup folder on my external HD but that should have nothing to do with VDJ's database
I had to re-name many songs in Serato but again, that should not have affected the songs on my external HD because it should only have changed the name in serato tags not the filename that VDJ reads.
VDJ reads a good portion of the database but...the main files that I play are not being read.
I'm thinking that it has something to do with the re-naming individual tracks in serato but I can't tell how that could be.
I'm stumped on this.
Someone help me figure this one out please. I have a big show tonight and I really need my database correct.

Why did you change the file names?
That would lose the file on the vdj side for sure.
The problem you had the last time is the vdj mp3 database was written to a different location on vista and could not be found or read until it was moved back, this is a different problem now.

The OLD 3.4 Database completely relies on the Filenaming convention and filesizes ... if you modify a file name or change an MP3 ID3 tag field then you have just 'disconnected' that file from it's reference in the 3.4 database.
Mensajes Thu 29 Oct 09 @ 8:09 am
I thought that changing the tag in serato leaves the filename alone. I thought that it just changes the name in serato only. The filename has not changed on the HD.
If I re-analyze in VDJ, will it wipe out what i've done in serato? I have not touched the database on my gig machine.

I did not see that part until I re-read your post. DAMN!!!

Also...If I hook my ext HD to my other laptop (the one I loaded serato on) and do a system restore, will that resolve my issue? If so, i'll just buy a new HD for serato.
VDJ is still my main DJ program and will remain so. Serato is a good program but I LOVE how VDJ works for me.

And the moral to this story is: Always test a small smaple first - and do this by creating a copy of the original files leaving them as they were...
I'm sure we've all learned this lesson the hard way at some point ;-)

So, why are you still using 3.4?
Mensajes Thu 29 Oct 09 @ 10:20 am
The MP3 ID3Tag thing is because it changes the size of the file. That is why some people had issues in 3.4 of losing connection of a file in VDJ's DB in the past.

I tested it with 6.0.2 and everything was gravy. I was all smiles. The thing I did not take into account was that it would have an adverse effect on 3.4 on my gig machine.
I have been using 3.4 on my gig machine because it works...It's that simple. I tried to upgrade on my gig machine but always wanted to keep 3.4 on it as well because...IT WORKS...
Whenever I tried to install 6.0.2 on my gig machine, it would wipe out the 3.4 database even though 6.0.2 is in a different directory. Thats why I still use 3.4
My new laptop that 6.0.2 is installed on is not working right yet. Vista and I are arguing about how VDJ is supposed to sound and work. I will be installing XP on that machine before long and win that argument.
In the meantime...I'm trying to get my current situation straight so I can ROCK tonights show.
Any and all help is welcome.

Well the next and only resonable question of fixing this is ... do you have a recent back-up of the mp3database.txt and VirtualDJ Database.xml file -- at least one where you would have 'minimal' work to get back up-to-date?
If not .. then there is no real quick way to get back to what you had ... sorry.

Yes...I have a recent backup of the database. I installed that database but it did nothing. Again, I don't understand.
Will I need to enroll in an in depth computer class just to be able to DJ?

These kinds of problems are exactly why development changed and updated in v5 and up.
We went to a lot of trouble to recover your database that involved both Chris and myself for many hours the last time all so you could use v6.
Why you insist on running this older version is non of my business, but its time to make the change once and for all.
We are not going to continue this non sence every time something gets lost because someone does not want to update to software that has corrected this.
