I just purchased the DN-s3700...one for now. I mix videos and when I tried to use the denon on the laptops I have it freezes. So I'm almost positive it's the laptop. Anyways I'm looking at the M17x by alienware and am wondering if you guys have any other suggestions for high end laptops. I was also looking at their desktops but those would be a pain hauling around a 45 pound machine. I'm worried that the 4 gig won't be enough power but I may be wrong...a 9 gig desktop for the same price sounds so much better. Any opinions would help. Thanks.

ah, this might start another debate. lol
people swear by both desktops and laptops.
desktops are cheaper and more reliable - more space, less heat, better specs.
if you are going mobile ALOT, you might want to keep that in mind - but if this is a dedicated gig computer, desktop is a good way to go - build in a rack.
for less than the price of an alienware, i bought an apple mackbook pro with 4gb ram and only 256 mb of dedicated video
video was pretty flawless, but it was completely amazing when i put windows xp on it and ran VDJ.

Thanks for your advice. We are a mobile dj service so we are on the move all the time. I feel like desktops look unprofessional but then again they are hidden during a gig.

The way I see it is there are 2 real choices in laptop computers
Macbook Pro or a Sony Viao (nw series is good with dedicated graphics) both have their strengths and weaknesses. However you should know there are currently no 64 bit drivers for the 3700 so if possible if you decide to go with windows make sure you can get it with a 32 bit os. This is purely my opinion so take it with a grain of salt. I'd stay far away from Dellianware.

About three years ago.. I invested in a small shuttle xpc... suggested by mp3jrick... and honestly I have had no problems with it.. and running only 1gb of memory too...playing vids and using timecodes... desktops are definitely the way to go. Of course I have it inside of a coffin.. you can see visit http://www/virtualdj.com\dreadlox to see what I am talking about... most persons never even realize that it is a computer.
I am too been thinking about a laptop...but just dont know what to get since i am in a third world country... no way to test.. no way to return if bought.. overseas. (want to set up a more mobile system).. but still hesitating

Thanks for the info...why do you suggest staying far away from alienware?

Wow 1gb of memory?! That's crazy. The link you posted didn't work but I ended up googling the shuttle xpc...small little thing. I think desktops are the way to go especially because most are upgradeable.

I've been looking at Dell's outlet area. You can get anything you need at a decent discount with same warranty as new for refurbished/scratch and dents.

I have a Macbook Pro. If you bootcamp windows, macbooks run windows better than most laptops. However, macbook pros don't cool off as good as normal laptops. Thats the only downside of macbooks running graphics. Been with Mac since 2004, and running my 2nd macbook since, bought it Oct 08, first unibody. I love the macbook, it can do anything.

My only concern with using a desktop is what happens if the power fails... With 'traditional' equipment once power resumes you just hit play again. With a PC you need to reboot. Plus it will probably want to do some diagnostics because of the failure.
At least with a laptop you have a battery backup. UPS's for PC's have fallen in price, but the are still big and heavy...
How do you desktop guys deal with this?

Roy I guess its just like carring your amps and other equipment. Setting up my equipment comes with the job I rather carry a bunch of heavy equipment and setting up with no music faliure than gettig on the mic and saying sorry for the delay guys my laptop just stop let it will only be a few seconds .LOL! It happened to me already LOL. Thats why I use a touch screen desktop now. You should give that a try my friend!

If it was to fail I would switch to CD's or the other laptop that we usually have with us. I'm not so worried with power failure...it happens once in a blue moon. Also with the alienware it only comes with the 64 bit but I talked with dell and they said as long as you have the windows 7 professional on there you can run 32bit mode up to 3gb of memory. Anyways i'm not looking to change to mac which may be stupid on my part but I love PCs. Thanks for all of your inputs!
