I am using the trial version on a laptop running Vista. All my music is on Zune software. It all shows up on the left side of the screen under the artist name, but when I move it over to create a playlist it drops the artist. the song shows up with a number in front of it (i am guessing its the track number from the cd) Does anyone have an idea of what I can do to get the artist info to stay with the song title?

From page 8 of the manual ;-)

That didn't work. Artist and song are selected in both windows yet the artist only shows as a folder in the far left panel

ahh..
so when you say
you are saying "all your music is organized under folders by "artist"
Q: these are mp3 files?
Q2: Using Windows explorer, can you post what these files look like?
Q3: How are your music files named? For Example: many DJ's name their music like this "Justin Timberlake - Sexyback.mp3"
I'm assuming your files look more like "3 - Sexyback.MP3" ??
Q4: assuming they are mp3's, do you know what "Tags" are? also know as ID3 info?

They are Zune files I believe mp4 is what they call them? Not really sure what tags are either. When I started to Dj we had 2 turn tables and a tape deck LOL. I am doing a benefit as a favor for my buddy so I dusted off the old mixer and picked up some cheap cd players. Then I saw this and figured I would give it a shot. I have a Zune subscription so I can download as many songs as I like which helped me get up to date with the new stuff. Just don't know who sings what songs ,so I am trying to figure out how to keep the artist name with the song when I make the playlists. Really like the software other then that.

on the left when I look for the songs I choose the zune folder and scroll down to the subscription folder and when that opens if has a list of folders all by artist. When I look in the artist folder it has the song usually with a number like 03 or 05 in front, I am thinking its the track number if it was a cd? But it doesn't have the artist listed in that song file

1.) .MP4 is a "container" or Format that holds music and video, and has become the new unofficial 'standard'. Just like the .MP3 format became the unofficial standard for "music"
2.) "Tags" is the data that is stored with the .MP3 or .MP4 file that contain information about the song..
IE: Artist, Title, Genre, Producer, Cover Picture, etc etc etc
not all 'formats' store "tags", IE: .WAV , .MPEG
but .MP3 and .MP4 usually do have the "tags" filled out when they are purchased from an online store.
(.WMA files also contain "Tags" but VDJ doesn't read them)
soooo...
your .MP4 files are not listing the Artist in the File Name itself... (just the track # and 'Song Title')
We need to get the artist 'pulled' out
OK!
first thing you need to try is: (from page 7 of the manual)
Retrieving Tag Data
This can be accomplished in several methods at different points in time. The first and most common is
using the Config -> Browser tab’s options in the Infos Gathering section.
TAGS
• Enabled – Supported tag fields (BPM, Album, etc.) are read immediately when track first seen.
• Disabled – Tags are not read and need to be added manually through the browser interface.
ARTIST/TITLE
• Enabled – If the corresponding tags do not contain data for the Title and Artist fields then the
filename is parsed and used for those fields. Parsing format of the filename is Artist – Title.
• Disabled – Do not read the tags and use the file name parsing.
Alternatively, tag information can be retrieved by using a right-click on a specific track in the browser
and selecting File Info. The figure on the following page gives an example of the database stored
information along with the corresponding tag information that is retrievable.
Under each field with a button will have the tag info next to it that can be read from the tag. Click on
the button to copy that data into the VirtualDJ data field. This data will be stored and used by the
VirtualDJ database. The next to the FileName field is used to parse the file name into the Artist and
Title fields.

sooo..
first go into "Config::Browser"
find the Tags option and make sure it says "enabled"
For songs that are already scanned you can 'right-click' it and select 'File Info'
big important question!
When you look at the File Info of your tracks, do you see "tag" info below 'artist' space?

Ok all the config stuff is correct. When I right click on the song and read file infos the file name reads like this
01 Release Me (Extended Mix).wma
04 Do You Remember.wma
So I am guessing since its a .wma thats the problem. Artist area is blank and no TAG is under the artist area. It will let me add the artist name. The only problem is we are talking about 4000 plus songs. I have a lot of typing to do lol

Alright I have it figured out when I rent the songs thru the subscription its a .wma and no artist info
When I actually purchase the song its a mp3 and has the artist info along with the TAG box you were talking about.
Thanks for all your help.
Now if I can figure out if my laptop can seperate the 2 headphones jacks in the front so i can que that would be another step forward

This is software out there that will take the tags in .WMA and rename the file to an industry standard of "Artist - Title.wma"
once the File is labeled correctly IE: "Artist -Title.WMA" VDJ can pull the names from the filename directly.
Mediamonkey and "Tag & Rename" or two examples of software that can do this for you and it can do it in bulk..
Myself I use Tag & Rename, it was $20 but it does everything I needed it to do for 'fixing' Tags and fixing file names..
As i mentioned, .WMA files do have the "tags" embedded, its just that VDJ doesnt read them..

Is this still accurate?
