A good tool for getting started is Sony Vegas on the PC and Final Cut Pro on the Mac.

Are we talking about editing here, or do you actually want to generate some visual FX from scratch? If yes, it's mostly up to how much time and effort you're willing to spend on learning your tools.
On a Mac there's Quartz Composer which can be used to do all kinds of nifty stuff, there's Adobe After Effects for adding visual FX to your video, 3D-modelling software like Cinema 4D, etc. etc.

absolutely, but if you are a complete beginner there is a programme called corel pro 12, not as powerfull as vegas but a good starter for video editing. will help get your head around some of the terminolgy and functions in video editing and will not overwhelm you.

I have used an app called Muvee (www.Muvee.com) that allows me to add clip(s) and music and then choose a style. It then makes a video based on these parameters. It's easy and relatively quick, as opposed to creating a video clip by clip.
Depending on your needs Muvee can of value.
Peace,
James

I use Vegas Pro 8 & 9, it's a great program with a nice learning curve, you should look into it.

Vegas Movie Studio is a lot less expensive than the Pro version. I recommend it as a "starter". It's what I use and I think my videos are fine and so do other mixers who submits work to various record labels, promo only, rock america, etc.

Definitely Sony Vegas pro or Movie studio. You'll definitely use that for editing/chopping up videos and use a prgram like Cyberlink Power director for fancy effects. This is a video which I used Sony Vegas for the editing.
