Tópico: Use of iPad as MIDI Controller

Este tópico es antiguo y puede contener información incorrecta para la nueva versión.

For some time I've lusted after a hypothetical DJ controller that was infinitely flexible and customizable, and it didn't occur to me until now with all the hype going on that the iPad could potentially serve in this role! (If you can actually power the damned thing with your USB ports, that is).

I found this article on Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/07/turn-your-ipad-into-a-midi-controller-in-3-700-easy-steps/

I think this would make a wicked controller for Virtual DJ. It could be fully skinnable, allow for a *huge* degree of customization, give complete visual feedback of all controls, sliders, knobs, etc, and display information.

I have been using the Stanton SCS.3D controllers, and this could probably compare somewhat to how those work, except far more customizable and with a greater resolution of control, and especially visual feedback.

The main problem with this, of course, is that the iPad is such a closed device, and Apple's application distribution model is such a pain in the ass, that it would likely be difficult to just allow any user to get into the guts of the application to customize the settings without jailbreaking or something. I think there is a lot of potential for this approach, however.

A lot of people will probably have an iPad anyways, so for those people to be able to use it along with VirtualDJ would be a great bonus. Just don't hit that home button and close the app!

Ah, of course... iTouchMIDI already makes a number of midi controllers for the iPhone/iPod Touch
Including iTM DJ http://www.itouchmidi.com/?q=node/192

It seems quite likely they will extend their applications to the iPad. I'm curious to know what kind of customization can be had, because I'm quite certain that such an application will fall far short of the potential that VDJ has to utilize a controller...

I purchased the VirtualDJ App and it worked great on my iphone 3Gs. I was so impressed I immediately went out and bought an iPad. Major disappointment. It is "virtually" useless on the ipad for real time mixing. The app is glitchy with pauses and not at all responsive...you need several trys to get the sliders to even move, and the button responses are not reliable either. For now, in order to even use it on the ipad I made a skin with only extra large buttons for controlling simple tasks. Is this an ipad or app problem? I don't need or want an ipad for any other purpose other than being able to use it as a controller for VDJ and don't want to be stuck with a $600 mistake if it isn't going to be useable for serious real time mixing. Anybody else experiencing these problems? Are there fixes in the works?

Well, I could kind of guess that it wouldn't be suitable for "real-time serious mixing" given how it works - there has to be a lot of latency over the network like that...

But was it that much better on the iPhone compared to the iPad? I can't imagine why there would be any real difference... The iPad itself should be just as fast as an iPhone 4, but perhaps the larger skin slows things down or something.

I wonder if the iPad could function more like a USB controller, instead of a networked remote.

I cant get new ipad skins to upload onto the ipad, it wont even let me select them to upload, any ideas?
