Tópico: Wondering whether to get an i-phone

Este tópico es antiguo y puede contener información incorrecta para la nueva versión.

I'm no expert when it comes to computers but I think I am more clued up than most, however, I have no real interest or knowledge in mobile phone technology. A phone is a phone to me and I make the occasional call with it. (I have even been known to send the odd text message too!).

Recently, I have been looking at an i-phone. Again, nothing top-of-the-range, just one with an 8 gig memory. I was wondering about their uses with mobile discos and particularly with VDJ. I didn't know until yesterday that an i-phone has an i-pod built in it. You learn something new everyday!

So, I was wondering about getting an i-phone and using it as a back-up system for my laptop at discos. I presume I would be able to use my external hard drives with it and plug it into my mixer. Would it actually run VDJ though? I am guessing not but since many DJs use their i-pods for doing discos I presume this is possible in some way.

Basically, is this a good or a bad idea? How would the i-phone integrate in this situation?

Thanks

John

You plug the iPhone audio output into your mixer line in and use it as an analogue audio source. Very useful as a backup device.

The iphone is a toy. You cannot use it as a backup for your system (since its only 8 gig anyway). Yes you can play songs from it into your mixer but that's it. Its not a cumputer nor a hard drive.

You may want to go to the apple site and do some reading of what the iphone can do.

Second go to modmyi.com (formerly modmyiphone.com) and do lots and lots of reading.

It works great till you get a message or phone call, that happened to me. I don't leave my phone in airplane mode so I can get calls and messages. I would think that would be the same with any phone unless you put it in airplane mode. You could change it to airplane mode on the fly. I normally need a song just need enough time for a reboot. You could put a prerecorded mix if a catastrophic failure would happen. I have a 2hr mix, that sits about 150megs. So 8 gigs is plenty, I don’t think you will play more than 100 songs in one sitting.

No-one should be stupid enough to be trying to run a gig from one, but if you need to reboot it could well be handy.

I see, so it's fine as a back-up player. For other things like running VDJ I was thinking along the "apps" line, but I know little about that. Like I say, I am not a techie when it comes to mobile phones.

I could just as easily use WMP or Winamp, etc. to act as a backup player.

Many thanks all.

What if your laptop takes a dive?? Just buy an MP3 player of some sort and load it up with a couple of mixed sets. Dont use your phone cause what if you have to call the wife to bring your backup laptop? Oh wait, you cant call cause your phone is being used (happened to me, lmfao). Just some food for thought.

iTouch will take care of a bad moment, while setting up or breaking down, thats what I use and I create "Venue Lists" to all my Gigs just in case for this purpose and with 64 Gigs I can just about do eventhing, including Music Videos....

Joey....

I phone is great for a lot of reasons. Has a great GPS system to help you drive to new venues, applications that work with internal GPS to guide you via public transportation, and most importantly....you have every song at your fingertips via iTunes. On more occasions than I can remember, I've been asked for a song (an obscure one) and grabbed it off of iTunes for only .99. Many times, the requester tips me a couple bucks because they know it's a hard song to come by, and I have a profit margin! there have even been a couple times where I didn't have the requested first dance or spotlight dance song at a wedding (I know I know, I fudged up) and was able to download it within minutes.

But like what was said before, make sure you put the phone on airplane if you play any track off it!

Nice one DJKizzle. I have also been thinking along these lines.

I have a Sony Walkman mp3 player which will do for now as my standalone mp3 player for now. The i-phone will probably be my next investment at some point in the near future.

Thanks everybody for the advice.

Rumor has it the new iPhone 4-G will be out in late December. I will have my 3GS iPhone for 1 year come November.

And where does that rumor come from?

I have other rumors saying the iPhone 4G will be presented June 7, at the WWDC ; and released in June or July, just like all other versions were.
