I was looking to buy a really cheap external soundcard for just bedroom or small party use, with a laptop, hercules mp3 e2 and some headphones. I know the Dj io soundcard and Maya44 are recommended, but for this type of use does it really matter which soundcard you use as long as it has front and rear R L outlets?

For small party, if you are not using time-codes, I would use any hercules with a built in sound card. I still use my MK2 for small parties.

The Maya44 is better suited to timecode or external mixer use.
Either the Numark DJIO or Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ would meet your needs.

if u are using the external sound card for headphones,ive used 2 different tyoes of creative soundblaster soundcards and didnt have much trobule with either

Thanks guys, I already had a cheap £12 soundcard being posted from a mates which I bought so I dont know if thats going to be any good as a temp solution, was looking at the dj io as a longer term solution as it is recommended by VDJ
