I am wondering what everone does about the annoying smoke smell that happens to your equipment when working in clubs.
I have been doing clubs for a few years now, and I wipe my laptop down every night and my speakers when I get a chance but
the vents on the Laptop still smell like smoke and inside the speakers do also...
I just got a new laptop and don't want it to start smelling like old one..

You got to move to the UK (smoking ban, all public and work places)... mind there's hardly as many people come out as what there used to.

Here in the UK you're no longer permitted to smoke in enclosed public areas so that's one small problem we don't really have to deal with anymore. Of course it brought it's own set of issues though!

They did pass a law for some dallas areas but it's not yet enforced..

its the smell of money. even when i didnt smoke i didnt mind - it meant people were there and that i was gonna get paid.
used to be people said "smoke 'em if ya got em"... now it's "smoke em if you can afford them and if the health nazi's will let you"
and yes i know - you hate being called "health nazi's" and we've all heard the smoking arguments.
there probably are commercially available odor neutralizers that can kill the smell - and i have to find one myself cause i used our vacuum at work and she says it still smells like the bar a month later. probably easier to buy new filters.
but since laptops dont have air filters, then i just dunno.

We can probably make one, I don't mind the smoking while I am there I don't smoke so I don't like to take it back home with me.
As for the speakers. its ok they live in the garage. but the Laptop and it's Bag is where the problem is.
I am thinking I can use a material similar to the crown amplifiers open the laptop and put it in the air inlet path.
using a spray on the laptop may cause more problem (electronics) than needed.

I have mixed feelings about it, I know it's a good thing but it's a bit of a dictatorship.
Smoking ban killed the pubs, late licence killed the clubs! Give me smeared light lenses to clean ones a month and a lappy the smalls a bit any day

I agree with the money part, but I would take the pay cut to work only in a smoke free environment. It not only bothers me and gives me a sore throat, but once the smells on your equipment, its in your car, then its in your house when you take gear inside.
Smoking is a disgusting habit, but I'm all for legalizing & taxing weed... go figure.

Belgium = full ban on smoking in 2011, so you can move here too soon. ;)

making an odor filter for a laptop sounds kinda iffy. they're notorious for heat issues, and blocking any airflow would probably be a very bad idea.

If your speakers are carpet covered, then perhaps there's an american version of this product we have in the UK "shake 'n' vac" - it puts the freshness back!

A guy in a DJ shop recommended that to me years ago for speakers, but I've never tried it.
And if they're not carpet covered, then you just need to clean them with a soapy cloth to get rid of the smell I would guess.
And for your laptop bag you could try febreze...

(BTW- since I'm in the UK too I don't have this problem, so these are just a few ideas that I haven't actually tired for myself!)

Here in the UK, we've lost the smell of cigarettes from our kit, but now it all smells of alcohol!! :)

Smoking in a club? Now there's a novelty throwback memory! lol Sorry we are a little more progressive here in Canada & don't allow that kind of self inflicted maliciousness!
Drinking yourself to death is however hugely popular! lol & yes we CAN drink with the best of them!

Even though I gave up smoking, when I DJ abroad and it's a country that doesn't impose a ban, I have to smoke in the booth just out of nostalgia. Can still mix, smoke and hold a pint in my hand as if i've never been away! recently i did it and some people watching thought I was just trying to be flash but then realised that I wasn't and had done it out of habit.
Not as good as that bloke with no arms mind.
