You would need a separate sound card such as Numark DJIO.

Controllers without sound cards are aimed at either DJ's who already have another sound card that they wish to use or are on a budget and will be using their computer's built-in output only (I.e: No headphone pre-listen or the mono split option.)

If you don't already have a suitable sound card, then a controller with one built-in such as Hercules RMX would be a good choice.

thanks.

I am thinking on getting a numark stealth. I will be playing out so what will i need and how will I connect it up in home and for club

What are your reasons for choosing the Stealth? Looks? Feel? etc.

You will need either to use the soundcard in your laptop and unless it is a multi-channel card you're not going to be able to cue or PFL and you're nt gong to be able to split the output properly.

Also, IMO, the sound cards in laptops simply aren't geared up to be amplified to 00's of watts as the output is usually an ampified headphone jack and not a line out.

Controllers like the Stealth and the Steel are, as said above, are good if you already have a 4in/4out sound card or other solution. You'll be looking to spend £180-£190 on the Stealth, £70-£100 on the sound card and then just over £200 ($299USD) to get VDJ Pro so you can use the controller with the software. That's an outlay of £490.

Alternatively, look at the hardware page (http://www.virtualdj.com/products/hardware.html) and look at something that is all inclusive, that comes with a Limited Edition (LE) version of VDJ and gives you an option to upgrade to Pro at a discount.

Two examples:

1. Hercules RMX - Controller and Soundcard £285(ish) + £100(ish) for Pro upgrade = £385(ish). Already a £100 saving.

2. Although not out yet, the American Audio VMS4 is getting rave reviews. Not only is it a controller (Bundled with VDJ 6 LE) but also a true analogue mixer that you can attached turntables of CD players to and not even have a computer attached. This will retail at £399 and as of yet I have no idea what the upgrade discount will be - doubt we'll find that out until the launch next month.

Again, the reason for raising this is just to make sure you've thought through what's needed. If you've got your heart set on a Stealth then by all means go for it. Just be aware of the overall cost involved.

Cheers,

Roy
